World Guard Wins 9th Consecutive
World Championships!

The Logan World Guard won its 9th consecutive title at the WGI World Championships on Saturday night, April 8, in the University of Dayton Arena.

The press release in the WGI website read:

"In Scholastic World finals, James Logan HS (96.85) took the Movement, Ensemble and Effect captions for its "spirite de altimira," inspired by a pre-historic cave drawing. Evocative of primal rituals, voices from the past created a haunting and ethereal sense that ultimately swallowed up everyone into the chasm of history."

Congratulations to all the World Guard students, to Mark Metzger and his staff for this unprecedented achievement!

The California Color Guard Circuit show at Logan featured thirty-four guard units.

We still need your help in completing the guard flags for their Winter Season programs. If you have time to support our kids, please contact Ilona Bogue at ibogue@rapiddisplays.com.

Winter Percussion Program
Promises to be Entertaining

This year's Winter Percussion program is entitled "Say Anything: The Music of Frank Zappa". The show is set in a quasi-comic-book environment with an MC leading the band. Quirky music, fast movement, and comedic elements are blended together to create an impressive and entertaining production. The ensemble will be playing excerpts of these pieces:

RDNZL
St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast
The Central Scrutinizer
Echidna's Arf

To come and enjoy this exciting program, here are their performance dates:

• February 25 - WGI Regional, Clovis East High School, Fresno
• March 11-12 - WGI Regional, Palo Verde High School, Las Vegas, NV
• March 18 - Modesto Percussion Show
• March 31 - Night of Guard, Dance & Drums, Logan
• April 1 - CVGPC championships, Modesto

Jazz Program Expanded This Year

The Jazz program at Logan has been expanded this school year. With an additional big band, we now have a total of four! Moreover, a Jazz combo has also been formed. A testament to the increased interest in jazz amongst our talented student-musicians!

Last December 10, the three big bands had their season debut at the Redwood Empire Jazz Festival at the Santa Rosa Junior College.

On February 4, these same three big bands and the combo performed at the San Joaquin Valley Jazz Festival at Buchanan High School in Clovis, California.

The annual Logan Jazz Night (originally scheduled for May 31st) has been moved to Wednesday, April 26, and will now be the "Reno Bon Voyage Concert." It will be held in the Little Theatre and admission is free. This concert will send off the top two big bands to the renowned Reno Jazz Festival to be held on April 28-30.

Our Jazz students are inviting all of you to come and support them on these various performances!

J & G Fundraising is Here!

The J&G fundraising, which was discussed during last October's Booster Meeting, is finally here! If you recall there's quite a selection of edible and interesting items that were shown to us at that time. The packets will be available to students in the Band Room on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 and at the Booster meeting that night.

The proceeds of this fundraiser will go to the student's account. Upon completion of the fundraiser, a portion of the sales your student account will be duly credited.

Carnegie Hall Tickets Update

We would like to inform all Wind Symphony parents who are attending the event at Carnegie Hall that the venue and ticket price information is now available via the Logan Band and Color Guard website.

Just click on the Mid-America Productions logo, when their web page is displayed, click on "Carnegie Hall Concert Series", then under "Current Season" click on 2006 - May. Then scroll down to "Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 8:00 p.m." for the program, pictures of the guest conductors (including Mr. Barrera), and a link to ticket information. Of the three performance venues available at the Carnegie Hall complex, Logan will be performing in the Isaac Stern Auditorium.

Returning Marching Band Uniforms

Many parents have been asking about the return of the band uniforms. They do need to be returned to Logan.

Here's what you need to do:

If you would like to receive a $10 credit into your child's account, please wash the band uniform (pants and jacket) and return the complete uniform (pants & jacket in bag plus shako in box) to the Logan band room by January 27.

Band Uniform Cleaning Tips

Wash it in cold water with a "Color Catcher" to keep the dye from running. ("Color Catchers" are found at Safeway, Walmart etc.) You may tumble dry your uniform on the low setting. Remove uniform before the dryer completely stops and it will have no wrinkles! There is no need to dry clean these uniforms. A light pressing is fine, but please use a lint-free cloth over the uniform when pressing (otherwise, it leaves a sheen on the fabric). Also, please check your marching shoes. Wipe off any dirt with a damp cloth (or paper towel), then use black shoe polish and a buffer (or soft cloth) to bring back the shine. If you follow these guidelines, our students will always look their very best at competitions. Thank you

Thanks
Sue Glenn
Uniform Coordinator

NEXT BOOSTER MEETING

November, 2005 Edition
by Ellen Rebosura

October Victories

On their way to successfully defending the WBA Championship, our students continue to wow the crowds each week with their performances of "The Secret Garden".

Their first competition was at the Gilroy field show last October 15. As the 5A competition began, the crowd eagerly awaited each of the schools to perform their respective programs. Our musicians and dancers dazzled the crowd as they won the Sweepstakes Award with a score of 83.20 and took the Caption awards for General Effect, Music, Visual Effect and Auxiliary.

The following week, October 22, our students went to Fresno for the Sierra Cup Classic. This was the first time this season that they competed against some of the schools from Southern California. This was also the first time when our beautiful flowers "bloomed" and our guards showed off their striking purple shrouds! It was another impressive performance as they won the Caption awards for General Effect, Music, Visual Effect and Auxiliary and took the Sweepstakes Award with a score of 86.80.

On the last Saturday of October, our students left for Salinas to compete at the ERI Live Oak Field Show. As our musicians played the beautiful music, our guards unveiled those stunning new flags! Another memorable performance for the students as they win their third Sweepstakes trophy this season, with a score of 87.95 and took the Caption awards for General Effect, Music, Visual Effect and Auxiliary.

Congratulations to all our band and guard performers!

Upcoming Fundraising Events

See's Candies - You will be receiving the packet for this fundraiser on November 15. The order will be available for pickup during the Winter Concert. The proceeds of this fundraiser will benefit your Student Account.

Silent Auction at the Winter Concert - December 13 is our annual Winter Concert/Silent Auction. Please start thinking of items you can donate to the Silent Auction. We'll give you more details as the date approaches. This is an annual fundraising event for the benefit of our general fund.

ATTENTION ALL GUARD PARENTS

Please review the memo regarding the additional cost for the "Secret Garden" costume. This was included with your November statement.

Nov 12 is Logan Field Show

We still have a few booster volunteer spots open. We're looking for two more volunteers for the 3rd shift (7-10) at the Front Snack Bar, three more volunteers for the 2nd shift (5-10) in the Souvenir Tent, and three more volunteers for the 2nd shift (5-10) selling the 50-50 Raffle tickets. For those of you concerned about missing the Logan exhibition, the Front Snack Bar will be officially closing at 9:00 PM. This gives you a chance to see the show at 9:15 PM. But please remember to come back afterwards to help clean up. If you are interested in selling the 50-50 Raffle tickets, you'll not only get to see the Logan exhibition, but many other bands as well.

And this shift will actually end at 9:00 to give us time to pick & announce a winner at the 9:15 or 9:30 break. Many hands make light work, as the saying goes. And less stress means more fun! So come on out, show your Logan pride, support our kids, and HAVE FUN!

Pay Fees by Credit Card (Limited Time)

The credit card machine we are renting for our Field Show is a monthly rental. Parents wishing to pay for any portion of their students' fees via credit card are welcome to do so. We are planning on making it available to booster parents on the following days:

Nov 8 - after the Booster meeting
Nov 11 - after Friday rehearsal (4:00-5:30 pm)
Nov 12 - at the Field Show ticket booth
Nov 15 - Tuesday night rehearsal (8:00-9:15 pm)

Please contact Liz Aguilar for any question.
Email: aguilarfmly4@aol.com

A Friendly Reminder

We just want to remind all boosters that before, during and after a rehearsal or performance, the band directors and consultants are busy discussing various aspects of the show and how to improve it. While it may seem like friendly conversation, they are actually in deep discussion and interruptions can greatly hinder the creative process.

If you have a question or information you feel the directors should be aware of, please try to find a Booster Board member, preferably the President, and pass on the question or comment. At an appropriate time, your message/question will be relayed to the directors and the Board member will get back to you with the director's response.

If after the rehearsal/performance is over, a Booster Board member is not available, please have the courtesy and patience to wait at a comfortable distance until the band director(s) acknowledge you and ask what you need. Please do not attempt to contact the directors before or during a rehearsal or performance, unless it is an emergency.

By following these simple guidelines, the show can mature, your needs will be met, and we can all enjoy the spectacle that is the Logan Marching Band and Color Guard!

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

David Crayne Assumes Booster Presidency

Linda Betsekas is unable to continue as this year's Logan Band Boosters President and has resigned. In light of this development, David Crayne, our 2006-07 President Elect, is stepping forward a year early to fill the position, effective immediately.

Consequently, we are in need of someone to assume David's former position as this year's President Elect (next year's President). This very important position needs to be filled as soon as possible.

Anyone interested please contact David Crayne or any member of the Boosters Executive Board for more information. Any and all inquiries are welcome.

Donations for Bottled Water Needed

This year we are proud to have 218 musicians and 57 dancers for a total of 275 students in the program. As you are aware, we have a very busy season of performances and competitions ahead of us. In each event we provide at least 2 bottles of water for each student along with a healthy snack or meal.

Not even counting the Long Beach trip for the Championships, we have a total of seven scheduled performances. So for the 275 students we would need 3,850 bottles of water!

We are requesting that every family donate at least two cases of bottled water for the students. Thank you in advance for your support!

Please contact Jerry Arroyo at 487-7424 or jlhs_pitdad@hotmail.com to make arrangements as to where and when to bring your donations.

Logan Field Show Preparations in Full Swing

As you know, the Logan Field show on November 12 is our biggest fund raising event. This year, we have 24 bands from all over Northern and Central California that will be competing and bringing with them friends and families to watch and cheer their bands.

To assure our success, we need plenty of volunteers to work during this event. There will be three 4-hour shifts needed for the various areas. Please consider volunteering for at least one shift. The following are the areas that we need help with:

Parking Lot

Crossing Guard

Front Gate

Back Gate

Roping the crowd

Snack Bar

Hand Stampers

Runners

Hospitality Room

"Welcome friends and families to the 2005 Field Season. Hold on to your hats because something new and exciting is happening with the Color Guards this year. To the freshman and first year Guards, you can look forward to an exciting and rewarding year. To all returning members, I ask for the same dedication you have shown in previous years.

I would like to say "thank you" in advance to all the parents who are working very hard to make it the best year for us! Without your support, we wouldn't be where we are today. Greetings

Greetings to all old and new members of the James Logan Band & Color Guard family! We're off to a great start with the nearly 300 members showing up to camp.

We had a wonderful band camp as was seen at the mini performance & BBQ on the last day of camp. I want to thank Linda Betsekas and all her booster volunteers for putting together a wonderful evening.

Lets all welcome our new staff members: Patricia Hurtado and Brian Sears - Associate Band Directors, Mark Metzger, Edmer Lozaro and Rafael Pagarigan - Color Guard, Tom Gierke and Josh Alfaro - Percussion. I am very pleased that these folks are on board and on the Logan team!

We are looking at a fun and exciting Fall semester. This year's show "The Secret Garden" will be full of musical and visual experience. Please make sure to get dates of our performances on your calendars and come and support the kids!

Sincerely,

Ramiro Barrera
James Logan High School
Director of Bands

Feature of the Month

Last month we featured three of our Booster Board members and they shared their thoughts as to why they enjoy volunteering. This month, we will know the reasons why our Head Chaperone and President-Elect chose to be active in our organization. Read on…

David Crayne, President-Elect
"My wife and I have two sons in the band: a senior pit percussionist and a sophomore trumpet player. Over the past three years we have been involved in several facets of the booster organization from being chaperones to pit crew. It's a lot of fun and we would recommend it to anyone and everyone who has a student in the program. Don't worry if your child thinks you are just going to embarrass them. Between their responsibilities and ours, we don't have that much contact. We keep just as busy as the kids and have just as much fun."

Jane Chen, Head Chaperone
"How exciting it is that the marching season is getting closer! My son Winston is in the 12th grade and is the assistant drum major. He also plays oboe in the Wind Symphony. Justin is in the 10th grade and plays French horn in the Symphonic band and trumpet in the Jazz band. This is my second year as the Head Chaperone. I had such a wonderful time last year with all the boosters, volunteer parents, staff and of course our kids that I've just got to do it again this year!"

Reminders

Please turn in your Handbook 'Acknowledgment Form' to any Booster Board Member.

Also, any student who does not have all four Emergency cards turned in will not be allowed to go on a trip!

To help crate our magnificent "secret garden" this year, we are calling on all boosters to be "gardeners" by helping create the wonderful flags and props that our Color Guards will be using.

No experience is needed to be a "gardener". All you need is to give a few hours of your time.

This year, we will be creating some of the most beautiful and spectacular flags we have ever seen in this organization:

Hand Painted Flower Swing Flags
We need volunteers to trace, paint, iron, rinse and finish sewing the edges and sleeves. To be completed by first show, October 8.

Brown Tree Flags
This flag will be cut in pieces from a pattern and sewn together. We need lots of cutters and sewers. To be completed by first show, Oct 8.

Big Giant Green Leaf Flags
Still being finalized, no due date yet.

Shrouds
Create a shroud for every Color Guard, cut and sewn from a pattern, need seamstresses for this project. We are looking for someone to take the lead on this project.

If you are interested in helping us put together these flags, the volunteers are meeting every Saturday morning in Room 62, James Logan High School.

For more information regarding this or any other questions pertaining to the making of the flags, please contact:

Wanted: Chaperones!

As our children perform at the football games and marching shows, chaperones are always there to attend to their needs so they can present their best performance on the field.

We usually need six to eight chaperones at each of the Friday football games and between fourteen to eighteen parents for each of the marching show trips.

For those of you who have already signed up, we will be sending emails to survey your availability and create a schedule for the upcoming events.

There will be a mandatory chaperone meeting to be announced shortly, to go over roles and responsibilities.

We still need more parents to chaperone, so if you are interested or would like to know more about this wonderful opportunity, please contact:

August, 2005 Edition
by Ellen Rebosura

Welcome

Welcome Back! Yes, it's that time again - Band Camp! I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer. It's an honor to be the Booster President this year and I'm looking forward to another exiting and rewarding season!

As you know, our successes in the past years were due to the vision of our teachers, led by Mr. Ramiro Barrera, the hard work and commitment of the students and the dedication of the boosters!

Boosters make it possible by sharing their time and talent to this organization. You don't need to be a Booster Board member to share; the only requirement is the willingness to support the kids. So come and be an active Booster volunteer today!

I look forward to seeing you all in our first Booster Meeting on August 16.

Thanks for you support.

Linda Betsekas
2005-06 Band Booster President

Mandatory Booster Meetings

On August 16, we will be having the Freshman Parents' Orientation meeting at 6:00 pm in the Logan Little Theater. All brand new parents to the Booster organization are required to attend this meeting to familiarize themselves with the Band and Color Guard programs at Logan.

At 7:00 pm on that same date, we will have the Boosters' Meeting, which is mandatory for all parents. The meeting will also be held at the Logan Little Theater.

We encourage everyone to participate in the monthly Boosters Meeting, every second Tuesday of the month, held at The Spot.

Mark your calendars!

Band Camp Begins August 16

Please help your students prepare for their upcoming band camp. Here's a list of items to guide you on this preparation:

Band Fees -Band fees are due on the first day of Band Camp. Students may turn in their payment during registration, which would begin at 12:00 noon.

If you have a color guard student, you would have already paid the required guard costume fee that was due in June. If for some reason, you have not paid for this, have your student turn it in during band camp registration.

For band students, a deposit is required for your marching uniform maintenance. You may also wish to purchase gloves and marching shoes during registration.

For details regarding the amounts for all fees, please check the Booster Newsletter that you received in the mail.

Clothing and Water - Please make sure your students are wearing appropriate clothing with consideration to the weather and the physical activity (marching), which they will be doing during the camp. Remind your students to keep themselves hydrated especially when practicing their marching routine!

Uniform Fittings for Band - Uniform fittings will be scheduled during registration on Tuesday, 8/16, due to the ongoing construction around the Bandroom. The fitted uniforms will be placed on the rack in the band room within a few weeks of their fitting for students to pick up. For questions, contact Sue Glenn at (510) 754-6806 or ucmama@sbcglobal.net

Please mail all payments to:

Feature of the Month

This month, we are featuring three of our Booster Board members. They will share with us their brief insights as to why they love to volunteer in our organization! Read on…

Diane Orsetti, Secretary
"I have a son who is a sophomore and plays in the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band C. I have been an active band booster for five years and the Secretary of the Board for the last three. Volunteering to help with Band & Guard events is very rewarding and a lot of fun. I've met a lot of great people and it feels good to know that I'm doing something that supports the kids and all of their hard work."

Liz Aguilar, Treasurer - General Accts
"I have a 10th grade daughter, Sabina, who's a Colorguard. This is my first year as a member of the Boosters Board. Last year, I was a chaperone in every trip during the marching and winter guard seasons and I enjoyed every minute of it! To see how hard all these kids work to achieve their goal is truly amazing. I am happy to assist in any way and I look forward to a great year with the Booster Board."

Cheryl Wellcome, Treasurer- Student Accts
My daughter Amanda is a senior band student this year and it is my second year to serve in the Booster Board. Volunteering to do this job is my way of showing support to the kids. Being a musician myself, I think that music plays an important part in our children's development."
