Greeting Scouters,
Don't forget, this weekend (9/22-23) there is Boy
Scout Day at the Santa Cruz Beach Board Walk. All
tickets are discounted for scouts and their families.
I
have attached the flyer and coupons for the discounted
tickets. This is a family event. I will bring in
hard copies of the flyer and coupon to the
meeting.
Last, the trail trekker hike, Rodeo
Lagoon, planned for this weekend has been changed
for the following weekend, September 29th. We will meet at
Searles, 8:30AM and leave for the hike at 9AM. This is a
really pretty hike with lots of wildlife and ocean
view.
Our Pack
Calendar for 07-08 is now posted on the pack
website. Hard copies of the calendar will be given out at
the next pack meeting.
Heads up!!! On October 7, there will be a Rocket
Jamboree being held in Dublin. I will need to have a
head count of who is interested in attending this awesome
event by this Friday's pack meeting. We will build a rocket
at our October 5th meeting and be able to fly them at the
Rocket Jamboree. Each participant will need to fill out a
registration form before hand. The cost of the registration
is $5 plus the cost of the rocket which we will build at the
pack meeting prior the event. There are rules to the event
please
read the attached the flyer.
See you at the meeting!!!!

John Gillen, Cubmaster

Total Lunar Eclipse Outing
For those who did not receive this email. This would
be another great pack event before the summer ends.
Unfortunately, the event will happen late on a Monday night
and maybe not suitable for the younger scouts (Tigers).
However, the older scouts, Webelos, may tolerate the late
hours and appreciate this wonderful phenomenon. Please take
note of the date, August 27th, which is a Monday night and
is a week from this coming Monday. Also, there is a fee and
registration for this event (See below). As an incentive,
for those who show and represent the pack (wearing the pack
tee shirt), the pack will reimburse you half of the cost. I
am plainning on attending. If you are going, I would like to
hear from you. Thanks-
Yours In Scouting,
John Gillen

Greeting Scouters,
Before I mention the "Contest", I would like to thank
those members who came out last Friday to hike the
experience of a life time, The Hoot Owl. Everyone who
attended had a great time exploring and learning about
nature at night. We even witnessed a few meteor showers. The
night sky was clear and the night air was cool. We
discovered what happens to colors at night, different scents
of wild native herbs, how the native owls fly, catch their
prey, "hoot" at night, and what spieces of owls live in the
area, and of course other wild life that roam the Livermore
valley such as king and rattle snake, foxes, coyotes,
bobcats, bats, so on. We did not see very much in the realm
of wild life but did see a bat fly by and an owl. We also
discovered there is spieces of flower that blooms in the
night sky but very deadly if eaten. Also, during our trek,
we found out what happens when we eat a Certs breath mint.
Boy did we see Forth of July all over again!!! I want to
thank Ranger Pat for taking time out of his day to take us
on this wondrous journey. I am looking forward to the next
opportunity to take the hike. Last, we welcomed and invited
Lionel and his dad to the hike. Lionel lives in Newark and
is interested in joining our pack but needed to know what we
do. He and his father had a great time and is looking
forward to visiting with us again.
Now the "Contest". As mentioned back in June, we have
the Pine Wood Derby "coffin" that needs to be decorated. I
mentioned to all our scouts I need a creative design idea
and you guys are very creative and thus can help me. There
will be a first, second, and third place winner in this
contest. The first place winner will have his design painted
on the "coffin". The only rules are the design must be
cubscout oriented, using cubscout colors and be able to
recreat the design with some ease. We will decorate the
coffin as a pack. I will need your designs ready by first
pack meeting on September 7th. We will judge the creations
at that meeting. I will have the First, Second, and Third
place prizes awarded that day and boy are they cool. Please,
mom and dad, mark your calendars!!!
Last, we have scheduled some summer activities. I am
waiting for our pack calendar to arrive. We have a Saturday
excursion at the Santa Cruz Beach Board Walk, a train ride
in Sonol, camping, so on. I will let everyone know the dates
as soon as possible. I hope everyone is having a great
summer.

Greeting Hikers,
As a reminder, next Friday, August 10th, is a
scheduled hike event---the Hoot
Owl Hike!!! So far I have 14 hikers signed up---these
hikers have first priority. I still have 5 slots left (This
does include myself. However, I will step down if needed).
If I do not hear from any one else by 6PM on the 10th, then
it will be first come first serve at Searles (I will include
siblings if all scouts who show have a spot and there are
spots left). There will be another opportunity in the Fall
of this year or early spring next year for those who could
not make the 10th. Once again, we will meet at Searles
Elementary School parking lot at 6:30PM and leave at 7PM.
The Hoot Owl Trail is located at the Sycamore Grove Park in
Livermore. Approximate commute time to reach the park is 45
minutes. This hike will begin at 8PM and end at around
9:30PM. This is a night hike and is guaranteed to be a great
experience for all. Please wear long pants and bring a
jacket or light sweater. Do not wear open toed shoes (ie
sandals, slippers, etc). All scouts and parents must wear
the yellow pack tee shirt. Scouts please wear your scout hat
and bring your handbook with you. It is advised each family
bring water, trail snack, first aid kit, flash light, and
camera. However, the flash light and camera must be
controlled by the parent[s], no exceptions---thank
you!!! If we all respect the rules we will all have an
awesome experience. The cost is $4 per person and $3 for
parking. Bring cash (dollar bills preferred) no checks
please. I will collect the money for the hike at Searles.
Parking will be the responsibility of each
driver---carpooling is advised. See you on the
10th.

Greetings Scouters,
I just want to remind everyone, there is scheduled
hike on August 10th, Friday. We will meet a Searles at
6:30PM and leave at 7PM sharp. The hike begins at 8PM. The
Hoot Owl is a
night hike and is located at Sycamore Grove Regional Park in
Livermore and takes about 45 minutes to drive there. The
hike is limited to 20 people, sorry no exemptions. So far
two families have responded (Cardenas and Rasmussen)---7
people. If I do not hear from anyone else between now and
the day of the hike, I will take the those who show up first
choice. BUT, if we go over our limit of 20, and there are
scouts who want to go, I will have to ask some who are not
scouts to give up their spot for the scout---Sorry. However,
there needs to be one parent for each scout. One exception,
if there is two or more scouts from one family, than minimum
one parent is required to attend. There will be another
opportunity for this hike either in the fall or early
spring---promise. The cost is $4 per person (cash please)
collected at the day of the hike. Also, there is $3 parking
fee for each car. All scouts and parent[s] must wear
their class B uniform---pack tee shirts. I would like each
scout to wear their scout hat during the
hike.
Please wear long pants and bring a jacket---no open
toed shoes please. Put on insect repellant. On this hike, we
will be working on rank and badge requirements. So, scouts
it would a great idea if you brought your handbooks and a
pen. No scouts need to bring a flashlight, only the parents
if needed. Cameras are OK but pictures are to be taken at
the beginning or end of the hike not during. You are
encouraged to bring water and trail snacks. If we all
respect the rules we will have a very awesome
experience.
I hope all of you are having a great
summer.
Yours In Scouting,
John Gillen
p.s. Please bring a personal first aid kit, also
important. Thanks

The 4th of July Parade was a
Success!!!
Last Wednesday, an annual 4th of July parade was held
at the city of Niles in Fremont. Many non profit
organizations, city and local government personal, retired
veterans, and active military personal participated in the
parade to celebrate this nation's most coveted holiday.
Hundreds of spectators took time out of their July 4th
holiday to honor those in the parade, and most importantly,
those who gave their lives for our independence. It was
truly a success in many ways. Some members of our pack had
an awesome time participating and caring the pack flag in
the parade. I had the honor of leading the boyscout's Eagle
Color Guard. Our own Troop 110 tethered a floating American
Flag and assisted a highly decorated WWII veteran, Capt Leon
"Woody" Spear, display his awards, medals, and personal
stories of WWII at the Niles Memorial Veterans Hall. He was
recently awarded the Congressional Medal for his bravery and
service to our country by President Bush. Besides Pack 268
and Troop 110, there where many other packs, troops, and
girl scouts showing their solidarity. It was truly an honor
being a scout that day. Pictures of the parade where taken
by our parents. If you can, please send copies to our
webmaster for posting to the pack web site (Skip Wagner -
macbrass@aol.com).
I want to thank those who came and participated. I am
looking forward to next year's parade. I hope you are
enjoying your summer-

Greetings,
Last Friday, the pack hosted it's last meeting for
the school year. The meeting primarily was to promote it's
membership and finish up rank achievements and planning for
pack graduation on following day. The pack meeting was
successful. With help of our pack commissioner, we gained
three new scouts, one Tiger, one wolf, and one Webelos I.
Our assistant cubmaster entertained the scouts and our
visitors while I talked to parents and assisted those scouts
who had last minute rank requirements to complete. The pack
took a moment of silence to remember Union City's former
Mayor, Tom Kitayama.
The next day, the pack conducted a graduation and
campout. The dinner and event was a successes. Everyone had
a great time. The pack was honored by one of it's former
cubmasters, Mr. Ortt. The parents and leaders of pack 268
cooked hamburgers and hot dogs, high octane baked beans, and
juicy watermelon----hmmm was it good!!! After dinner, the
graduation commenced. Nine boys attended and graduated to
the next rank, 6 Webelos I, 2 Wolves, and 1 Tiger.
Furthermore, all of our scouts completed their previous
ranks and earned their rank patch. Congratulations to all
our scouts, they did an awesome job!!! Three boyscouts from
Troop 110, who are also former cubscouts of Pack 268,
attended the event and did a great job entertaining the
audience with their two skits. Even our cubscouts managed to
entertain us with their skit. They all performed perfectly.
After the graduation, the scouts who stayed for the campout
enjoyed a campfire and cooking Some' ores hosted by our
assistant cubmaster and den leader. Unfortunately, the night
hike was cancelled due to the graduation ending late. The
boys had fun anyway. The next day, pack 268 enjoyed a
beautiful mourning breakfast cooked by the parents and
leaders of the pack. Some of our members stayed on to fish
at the lake.
I want to take this time to thank every one who
participated in making the pack meeting and graduation a
success. Despite the challenges experienced at the meeting
and graduation, the event still managed to shine and leave
everyone in an awe. I am looking forward to more events like
this. THANK YOU so much for your help!!!!! May the next
school year be more successful than the last. By the way,
any one who took pictures at the meeting or graduation,
please make sure you send copies to Skip our webmaster.
Let's keep building our wonderful story.
I was told we need to have a summer event planned.
There are many possibilities. Bowling, miniature golf, water
slide park, archery, hike, or a picnic are great summer
ideas. The water slide idea is most fitting and would be a
great way to celebrate summer. We can also do them all.
Which leads me to our parent meeting happening a week from
this Friday, 22nd of June. I was told the meeting will be
held at Mr. Denney's house beginning at 6:30PM. Address and
directions will be emailed to all soon. This meeting will be
used to plan and construct a pack calendar. Therefore, in
order for this meeting to be a success, every parent and
leader from the pack will need to be present. Please bring
with you a home calendar and school calendar for 07/08. If
you need to bring in your kids in order to attend please
inform Mr. Denney. Advice: the meeting would more productive
if the children where left at home (with a responsible adult
of course).
Last, our assistance cubmaster has announced he will
be taking over cubmaster's role next February. Thank you,
Mr. Chan-

I am forwarding this email to all our pack members. I
did not know our former UC mayor, Mr. Kitayama, and his two
sons, were former members of our pack. The pack truly has
deep roots in the UC community. This only reinforces the
need to keep the pack alive. I would like to take a moment
of silence at the pack meeting this Friday in memory of Mr.
Kitayama's. Please join me-

Bill (Fournell), I would appreciate it if you can
stay on top of whatever might be happening, keep us informed
on the details, and volunteer our participation at every
opportunity.
Bruce and others, you may not know this, but when the
new Kitayama elementary school was dedicated, Pack 268 was
asked to privide a color guard. We were told this was
because Mayor Kitayama's sons had been members of the pack
at Searles. Most of the Screaming Eagles were in that color
guard, as were some of the Cobras.
It would be a great and fitting service for Troop 110
to provide.

Greetings,
Last Friday (6/1/07) the pack conducted another
successful meeting. Seven scouts attended along with five
adult leaders. The scouts worked on rank requirements and
had a lot of fun doing it. The boys squeezed a game of
kickball as an activity. The parents used the time to
continue planning efforts for the graduation and upcoming
events. Afterwards, the pack enjoyed some sweat juicy
watermelon.
Another boy joined our pack at Friday's meeting. His
name is Juan and will be a first grader next school year.
His is Hector's brother, and will be the pack's newest Tiger
cub and member. So let us welcome him to our
pack!!
Next Friday, the pack will have another meeting but
will be it's last for the 06/07 school year. This meeting
will primarily be used for recruiting new members and
finishing up any rank stuff. Therefore, I need all scouts
from the pack to attend. Let us show our visitors how alive
and healthy the pack is. As always, I need all scouts to
wear full uniform and bring in your handbooks. Parents,
depending how many visitors show, you will be helping with
recruiting and finishing up the graduation planning. Scouts,
as always, bring in a friend (and his parents) to this
meeting. If your friend joins, you will be awarded a patch
and prize.
Steve, I am low on parent and scout applications. If
you could bring some with you to the meeting that would be
great---thank you!!!
Parents, if you have not done so, please take the
Youth Protection and Fast Start training as soon as
possible. This can be done online and done in a short time
(http://olc.scouting.org/).
These training classes are required for all leaders. Thank
you!!
Last, as promised, their will be a parent meeting on
June 22, Friday, at 6:30PM. The place is still being
determined. The meeting will used to construct a pack
calendar for school year 07-08. We will need a calendar to
mark up, including school calendar, and possibly a BSA
calendar. This meeting will be mandatory for all leaders and
parents.
See you at the next pack meeting-

All,
This Friday will be a pack meeting, 7PM, at Searles.
We will be working on rank achievements, and if weather
permitting, playing a short game of baseball (bring your
favorite baseball equipment). I want all scouts to please
wear your uniform and BRING your handbooks. The roster will
need to be updated. I will be picking up patches this
weekend. I also need someone to help with the construction
of the graduation program. I have a rough draft completed
but need to format it in a book form. If there is anyone who
is handy with such a task please let me know ASAP. I will
need to get together with you to go over the details. Skits
and songs for the graduation still need to be rehearsed and
documented. I want to include this information on the
program. Also, we need to finish up on the planning aspects
of the graduation.
Last, scouts, please finish painting your bird
feeders. At June 8th's meeting, which is a week from this
Friday, will be designated as recruiting night for the pack.
We will display the bird feeders to our visitors. It would
be nice to to bring in your pinewood derby cars and rain
gutter boats if you still have them. I need every one to
show up for that meeting as well.
Heads up, June 8th will be the packs last meeting for
the school year!!! I will, however, be holding a parent
meeting (location TBA) to construct the pack calendar for
the school year 07/08. I will need every available parent to
help on this.
Tinella, I need to get the pack's sign back, and if
you can, please bring in the Hot Dog proceeds with you.
Thanks-
See you all at the meeting,

All,
I have created a small story, including candid
pictures, of our experience of the Memorial Day Flag
Dedication at the Golden Gate Cemetery. The boys who
attended had a great time, but most importantly, were able
to honor the fallen solders and have a greater respect for
the freedoms we have. Record number of scouts and their
families attended this grand event. The actual flag
decoration ended in less than an hour. I know some of our
families took pictures at the event. Please do not hesitate
to share your stories and pictures with the pack. I am
hoping this will not be the end of our journeys with the
pack. There is so much yet for us to do and experience. Let
keep adding chapters of our experiences to the pack's
"memory" book. Thanks to the families who participated last
weekend. I am looking forward to more.
You may view the story and pictures by going to our
Members
Area.

Greetings,
This Friday (6/1/07) there will be a pack meeting
7PM, at Searles. We will be working on rank achievements,
and weather permitting, play a short game of baseball. I
need all scouts to please wear full uniform and bring
handbook to meeting. We only have two more meetings before
graduation. Also, for the game, please bring your favorite
baseball, mit, bat, and what ever gear you want to bring. I
have invited some guests who are interested in joining our
pack so it is important all pack members attend and
participate. Lets show our visitors how alive and fun Pack
268 is. Our next pack meeting will be on June 8th, it is a
Friday and will be at Searles. This meeting will be devoted
to recruiting and finishing up any rank achievements and
graduation planning. SO, the next two meetings will be very
very important. Please make every effort to
attend.
Last, if any of our pack members have pictures from
past pack events, please save them on a CD and bring the CDs
to the meeting. I will make sure Skip Wagner our webmaster
gets them. Thank you. See you all at the meeting this
Friday-

All,
As promised, I am attaching information regarding
another option for celebrating Memorial Day. This event will
be held on Monday at Anthony (Lake) Chabot. I am not sure if
there will be a patch for the Chabot event but definitely
for the Golden Gate Flag decoration on Saturday. Please
review the attached flyer. See you at the meeting
this Friday.

Greetings,
Last Friday, the pack held a meeting at Searles, 7PM.
During the meeting, seven scouts attended and enjoyed
building bird feeders from a kit. Afterwards, they played a
short game of football. The meeting adjourned early to allow
time for adults to bring their garage sale donations to
Amita Gupta's house for the Saturday pack fundraiser. One of
Amita's neighbors and very close friend (I am sorry for not
having her name) gave up her garage for us to use for our
sale---thank you. Amita's friend is very involved with the
scouts since she has two boy scouts of her own, one very
close to receiving his Eagle rank. We wish him well. The
pack garage sale was very productive. The garage sale lasted
for two days and many of our parents donated their time and
treasures to make this fundraiser a reality. Many thanks to
Amita and Raj Gupta for coordinating this event. Radhu
Sethi, for donating her time and talent. Bruce Chan, for
loaning the tables. For the pack parents Christine Ortt,
Jennifer Rasmussen, Carlos Johnson Sr., Vilma Pichardo, and
Sylvia Sanders for donating their time and treasures. Many
thanks to our scouts, Richardo, Quentin, Aaron, and Carlos
who helped during the sale by demonstrating the toys. The
total proceeds of the fundraiser came to $540.48----wow!!.
Thank you all!!!
In addition to the pack garage sale, the pack held a
hot dog sale coordinated by Tinnella Coats at her house. Her
HOA was conducting a yard sale that day and allowed Tinnella
to raise money for the pack by selling hot dogs. Christine
Ortt assisted Tinnella along with their son's Hudson C. and
Jordan O. The total proceeds of the hot dog sale are still
being tallied. The hot dogs where very good, I know, I had
one. Thank you, Tinnella and Christine (and scouts) for your
time!!!
Our next pack meeting will be this coming Friday,
25th, 7PM, at Searles. We will be working on rank
achievements and planning the graduation. Remember, scouts
keep working on your ranks. Some of our scouts have
completed their requirements. Also, please wear your
uniforms and bring your handbooks to the meetings. It is
very difficult to update the achievement roster without the
book, memory does not work. Scouts, for those who completed
their feeders and painted them, please bring in your feeders
to for show and tell. Aaron finished his feeder and boy did
it look sharp!!! I would like to take pictures of your
painted feeders and post them on the pack
website.
The next weekend's event will be held next Saturday,
we will be joining Troop 110 in celebrating Memorial Day in
placing flags on veteran's tomb stones at the Golden Gate
Cemetery in San Bruno. The event begins at 8AM and ends
around noon. A commemorative patch will be earned for each
scout who attends---I will be there, I hope some of you will
be their as well. This is a great way to celebrate and honor
those who gave their lives so that we can enjoy our freedoms
today. There will be another Memorial Day celebration held
at Anthony Chabot park on the same day as the Golden Gate
event. I will have the details of this event posted on the
pack website very soon. I recommend, if you haven't, to
visit the website often.
Last, Steve Armstrong, the pack commissioner, has
been working very hard with recruiting members for the pack.
He is sending out flyers again to elementary schools in
Union City to promote cub scouting and inform all about our
pack. It is very important we continue with recruiting new
members. Some of our scouts have brought in friends and some
of those friends have joined, but the pack needs more. The
more members we have the more fun and exciting the pack will
be become and the longer it will remain Remember: "the pack
helps the cub scout grow...the cub scout helps the pack go.
Please keep this in mind. Thank you!!
Once again, thanks to those members who contributed
to the fundraisers and made them successful!!! It is
dedication and willingness to make a difference that keeps
the pack alive. Thank you!!!

John Gillen

Garage Sale Extended to
Sunday from 8AM to 1PM!!!
Sunday, May 20th, the pack will be extending the
garage sale from 8AM to 1PM. We need help with managing the
sale and cleaning up. It is expected we will have left over
items and will need to send them to Saint Vincent De Paul or
Good Will. Anyone who has a truck or van please drop by and
load up after the sale. I will be attending the sale from 12
to 1 and helping with clean up. Thank you in advance for
your help-

All,
As part of their requirements, the boys need to build
a useful item using various hand tools. They will be
building a bird house next meeting, Friday, 18th, Searles,
7PM. If you have tools such as a small hammer, pliers, eye
protection, Philips and bladed type screw drivers please
bring those items as I my supply of tools will be very
limited in numbers. Also, if you do bring tools, please put
your name on each piece. The houses will be made of
unfinished wood. We will not be painting these houses, that
will be done at home. However, I may have the boys primer
them, not sure, still deciding. Make sure all our scouts
bring their handbooks to the meeting and come in full
uniform. It would be advised if they brought an old tee
shirt to be used while constructing the bird house. See you
this Friday-

Pack Minutes for May 11th meeting
Last Friday, 7PM, the pack had a regular meeting. Two
boyscouts from Troop 110, Glenn G. and Allen C., acted as
Den Chiefs for the pack. The cubscouts who attended worked
on rank achievements with the help of the den chiefs. The
attending parents began planning the graduation, Hoot
Owl Hike, and the fundraisers. Amita Gupta, who is
coordinating one of the fundraisers, garage sale, attended
briefly to discuss the particulars and answer questions. The
garage sale will be held at Amita's neighbor's house on
Saturday, May 19th, beginning at 8AM. This neighbor has
graciously opened her garage for us to sale our donations.
The address will be sent out by Amita via email so please
review your emails regularly. Amita would like the donations
dropped off at her house before the day of the sale
beginning this Sunday. (for
Amita's address, see our Members area).
Please, mark each item with a dollar amount. However, if you
want Amita to price your items than let her know and she
would be happy to do it. Please remember, all items will be
negotiable. Also, we have more open slots for the shift
sheet and need the help especially in the afternoon. early
mourning set up, and clean up. Please help!!. There is
another fundraiser at Tinnella's House (for
Tinella's's address, see our Members area).
She is conducting a hot dog sale at her HOA yard sale. She
will not need as much help. It would be nice if people
alternated between the two fundraisers since they are on the
same days and within 10 minutes of each other. The shifts
are 2 hour increments beginning at 8AM and ending at 5PM
(could be earlier).
One of our scouts, Jordan C., brought a friend, Ty,
to the pack meeting. He is a 3rd grader and has expressed
interest in the scouts and wanted to see first hand what the
scouts do. The pack welcomed Ty and included him in the
activities. Hopefully, he will join our pack next meeting.
Please keep spreading the news about scouting!!! Carlos J.,
another scout, has promised to bring in a friend next
meeting. Keep up the good work guys!! Remember, when you
bring in a friend and he signs up, you will receive a
recruiters patch and gift.
Also, scouts, please remember to do a good turn this
week and to discuss it at the meeting. Keep working on your
rank achievements. Graduation is nearing, June 9th!!!. We
will have it at Lake Chabot and there will be a campout
afterwards with a night hike and craker barrel for those who
are staying the night. The next day, breakfast will be made
in the outdoors, really exciting. Fishing and boating is
allowed at the lake. Bring your own rod and bait. However,
for those 16 and older, a fishing license is required. For
boating, you can bring your own or rent. Life jackets are
required.
Last Saturday, May 12th, Mission Peak had it's annual
district dinner. Tri Tip was served along with many very
good side dishes and deserts provided by the attendees.
During the dinner and awards, a silent auction was held. As
promised, three of our adult leaders were recognized for
their service. Radhu Sethi (committee chair), James Rardin,
and surprisingly, myself were the recipients. Rahdu was
awarded Certificate of Appreciation, and I received,
District Plaque. James Rardin received his Cubmaster Award
(to be presented at the graduation). All are prestigious
awards for outstanding service to the scouting program.
Congratulations to all our recipients!!!!
Our next pack meeting will be Friday, 18th, Searles,
7PM. Happy Mother's Day to all our
moms!!!
FYI: In addition to insurance and address information
I am collecting, I will be seeking DOB for each scout
(birthday purposes). Unfortunately, I did not include this
on the address sheet, sorry.

Important: Pack
Graduation
The graduation will be held on June 9th at Two
Rocks, Lake Chabot. Our camp will open at 2PM and will
have to vacate it the next day at 11AM. There is a lot to
plan for the graduation and is too much for one or two
people to do it. Therefore, I will need help with the
following:
1. Graduation program (John Gillen, one more)
2. Pre dinner games (Need one to two people)
3. Dinner: preprep, cooking, serving, cleanup. (John Gillen,
Bruce Chan, 2 more)
4. Awards Handing out patches, neckerchiefs, slides,
handbooks, and hats. (John Gillen, Bruce Chan, Christine
Ortts)
5. Songs and skits (Mike Denney, one more person)
6. Night hike and cracker barrel (Bruce Chan, Mike
Denney)
7. Breakfast (Need two or three people to do this)
8. Reservations and tour permit (John
Gillen)
Please review this list and help out. For the dinner
and breakfast, food will need to be bought the day of. The
pack will reimburse you for your expenses. Please keep your
receipts. The dinner will be hotdogs and hamburgers. The
side dishes and desert are open to suggestion, beans, salad,
and brownies/fruit? The breakfast, pancakes and sausage? For
beverages, water and juice. I will bring the pack juice
dispensers. The graduation cannot be successful without the
help of wonderful and talented parents and leaders like
yourself. Please send me back your preference. Thank you in
advance for your help. The Dinner will start at 5PM with the
awards beginning an hour later.
For the those who are staying overnight, there is a
limit to 5 vehicles parked in the overnight lot. If there
are more needed, I will need to know this in advance since
there is an additional charge $6 per vehicle. Also, for
those staying overnight, please come early to allow plenty
of time to pitch your tent and unpack. For those leaving
after the graduation, you will need to vacate the park by
9PM. I will be mailed a key that allows vehicle access to
the camp for dropping off and picking up gear only. I will
need this key back in order to get our $25 deposit. All
scouts must wear their uniforms during the graduation.
Please bring another set of clothes for before and after
activities but must wear the pack tee shirt.
Thanks-

John Gillen

Hoot Owl Hike, Date
change
I signed up the pack for the Hoot
Owl Hike in August. Unfortunately, the Hoot Owl hike
has been changed from 8/24 to 8/10, which is still a
Friday. The time of the hike will be 8PM. We will leave from
Searles at 7PM and return at around 11PM. I would advise
carpooling since there is a parking fee of $3.00 per car.
The pack will pick up half the cost of the hike, $80. The
other half will be collected from each person, $4 per.
Sorry, the parking fee will be the responsibility of each
driver. I will remind you when we draw closer to the date of
the hike. Thanks for your patience. I will need 19 committed
hikers to attend. The hike will be a very memorable event. I
will take care of the tour permit, or if someone else wants
to do it, let me know I will help you- By the way, I will
have to attend the hike, however, I will need another adult
leader to satisfy two deep.

5/6//07
Greetings,
I hope everyone had a chance to celebrate Cinco de
Mayo this weekend. Last Friday, I held a short parent
meeting at Searles to gather insurance and address
information and discuss the graduation and fundraiser
details including the Hoot Owl hike. There are more families
I need to gather
insurance and address information--please respond as
soon as possible Some of our scouts whom attended worked on
rank achievements. One scout completed his Bobcat
Trail---congratulations, Carlos!!!
Regarding the graduation, I need to know who will be
attending the graduation and campout on June 9th. I have
some families who have committed---we need a minimum of 11
people in order to keep the campsite. The scouts will need
to complete their rank achievements by graduation in order
to receive their rank patch. Therefore, it is imperative
they work on the achievements at home as well as at the pack
meetings. However, if the scouts do complete their ranks by
graduation, they will still advance to the next rank but
will not receive their previous rank patch.
Now the fundraiser, I need to know who will be
helping out with the pack fundraiser on the 19th. There will
be a garage sale and a hot dog sale each at different
locations but the same day. Amita will be conducting the
garage sale in her neighborhood and Tinnela will conducting
the hot dog sale in hers. Both will need help, however, the
garage sale will require more. Donations for the garage
sale, please bring them over to Amita Gupta's house next
weekend. I will give you directions to her house at the next
pack meeting. Your are welcome to price your own items or
you may have Amita do it. Remember, prices are
negotiable.
For the Hoot
Owl Hike this summer, there are openings left. I will
register the pack for August 24th this week. IF there are
any objections please let me know now. Once the pack
commits, it is a done deal. The hike will begin at 7:30PM, a
Friday evening. We will leave at Searles at 6:30PM. I will
not be attending unless I am needed.
Next Friday, 11th, there will be a pack meeting at
Searles, at 7PM. We will be working on rank achievements,
graduation details such as skits and songs, dinner, awards,
and the campout. We will also discuss the logistics for the
fundraisers. Please attend. Scouts, please wear your full
uniforms and bring your handbooks!!
The deadline for the Summer camp discounts for
cubscouts and Webelos is ending this Monday, May 7th. Please
make every effort to send your scout to this awesome summer
event. All camps require medical forms for the scout and
attending adults to be completed and filed. So far no scouts
have signed up. Please consider doing this.
Last, next Saturday, 12th, there is a district dinner
being held at the LDS Church at 810 Walnut in Fremont. The
evening will begin at 6PM and reservations is required. The
cost is $12.50 per person, includes a Tri Tip dinner. The
pack has a few adult leaders being recognized at the dinner.
It would be nice if the pack leaders and adult members
former and present attended to honor the adults who are
being recognized. Adult members are encouraged to bring an
appetizer to share, either a salad or dessert (determined by
last name). Please visit http://www.sfbac.org/mp/events/dist_dinner/index.cfm
for more information. FYI: I will be attending. Let me know
if you want to attend. Thanks-

scouting experience. Their will be dinner served at $12 a

All,
The garage sale is going as planned thanks to
everyone involved. Amita has been successful in locating a
site for us to have our garage sale. This site will be close
to Amita house but in a location near a busy street I know
there is another potential site offered at Tinnella's
house---also an good location but we would be sharing this
with another garage sale. I need input as to which site to
have our sale. We need to make decision as soon as possible.
Also, Amita has offered her home to drop off the donations
BUT she wants to have the donations a week before the sale
to allow her to do an inventory check, sort, and price the
items. She would welcome help. She has also managed to
collect donations from friends and coworkers. Maybe some of
our other parents have friends that would like to donate as
well. Ask around. The more selection we have the better the
interest will be and the more money the pack can raise. We
will need help from everyone involved from set up to clean
up. Anyone who owns a pickup truck or van please bring it we
will need all the help we can get.

Hi John,
I even found a location for the garage sale. A friend
of mine lives closer to the entrance of Quail Run and she
has offered her driveway to us for the 19th. Many of my
friends responded that they are going to donate some stuff.
I also changed my plans for that day and will be available
till 4.00pm.
Thanks -- Amita

Greetings,
Last Friday, 27th, the pack conducted it's meeting at
Mr Chan's house. The meeting was shared with Troop 110's
meeting. The cubscout of pack 268 worked on rank
achievements, and afterwards, climbed a makeshift rock wall,
enjoyed cooking Smores over an open fire AND enjoyed a apple
cobbler prepared by Mr. Sims of Troop 110. Nine cubscouts,
out of twelve, attended the meeting. The pack will have
another new scout, 3rd grader, (sorry do not have his name),
whom is a friend of Mike D. Thank you, Mike!!! As a
reminder, the pack is in need of Tiger Cubs, first grade. We
only have one Tiger Cub. Boys who will be in first grade
next school year are highly desired. They can join the pack
at our graduation. Something to ponder.
The parents of 268 began planning the pack
graduation/campout in June, fundraiser in May, and the Hoot
Owl Hike for the summer. The graduation will happen on June
9th at Two Rocks, Lake Chabot. Hopefully, ALL of our scouts
will advance to the next rank and receive their rank patch.
However, regardless, the boys will receive their
neckerchief, slide, and handbook for the next rank. Prior to
the graduation, dinner will be provided. After the
graduation, for those who will be camping overnight, a hike
under the stars and cooking Smores will be the highlight of
the evening. The camping event will be conducted by the
Assistant Cubmaster, Mr. Chan. He will need one more
registered adult leader to accompany him. IMPORTANT: each
cubscout who is camping, must have one parent or adult
partner (21 years or older) staying with them---this is BSA
rules. Our new Webelos scouts will need to do an overnight
camping as part of their rank. They will need to pitch a
tent and use it, pack an overnight bag with extra clothes,
toiletry items, flashlight, sleeping bag, etc (list is in
Webelos Handbook). Please keep this in mind. The cost of the
reservations for the campsite/picnic is $58 (for the entire
Pack) with $25 deposit for the gate key. The campsite
parking lot is limited to 5 cars overnight, any additional
cars is $6 per car (Carpooling maybe wise). Therefore, I
will need to know who intends to camp out. I will need to
send in the money to the East Bay Regional Parks within 14
days from the day of receipt (27th). In addition to payment,
the pack will need to send a copy of the tour permit from
council, filled out by the two leaders managing the
graduation/campout. The permit validates our graduation,
permits us to conduct BSA outdoor events such as this
graduation, and protects us from liability. I will need all
drivers who are transporting cubscouts to and from the event
to fill
out the attached BSA insurance spreadsheet (Excel
spreadsheet) and return it to me as soon as possible. This
accompanies the Tour Permit. I will also give a hardcopy to
Mike Denney to bring to the next pack meeting on May
4th---please fill it out. Eventually, I will have everyone
complete the insurance form with addresses and have it filed
for reference on the pack's secured Members section of it's
webpage. Last, in addition to the rank achievements, the
scouts and leaders will be working on skits and a song as
part of the graduation entertainment. This is another
incentive for all scouts and leaders to be present to the
meetings.
The fundraiser will be held on May 19th, Saturday.
The location is still being determined. We will need
everyone to begin looking for items they do not want and
want to donate to the pack garage sale. However, please hold
on to it and bring it to the day of the garage sale. Also,
we need to have families fill in what shift they want. The
shifts will begin at 8am, 2 hour increments, and more than
one family can share a shift (probably will be limited to
two). Keep in mind, the logistics can change depending on
interest and inventory. I have attached a shift
sheet (preliminary - MS Excel file) . Please look it
over and give me your preference as to the shift or wait to
the pack meeting next week. I will give Mike a hard copy.
Amita, I know you have volunteered your services for the
fundraiser by wanting to coordinate it, so if you can, I
will need someone present all day of the sale to handle the
administrative portion of the sale, could you do this? I
will be present in the AM as I have another commitment in
the afternoon. Also, as mentioned, the location is still
being determined. It may happen at Tinnella's house, or if I
possible, at the Hendee's house.
For the Hoot Owl Hike, we have 13 people signed up
and the date agreed so far is 8/24/07, Friday night at
7:45PM (please
review the attached schedule). There are 7 slots left.
The cost will be $4/person. The pack will pay half,
otherwise, the cost will be $8/person. There is a parking
fee of $3/car. So carpooling maybe a wise choice. Absolutely
no one is allowed to wait in the car during the hike.
However, you can drop off your group and pickup afterwards.
There must be two deep leadership (two registered leaders,
taken Youth Protection and Fast Start) during the hike. I
will not be attending, unless needed. Since this is an
official scout event, a permit will need to be filed with
council. The hike is located at the Sycamore Grove Regional
Park in Livermore, about 20 miles east of Union City. Allow
1 -2 hours for the hike, wear sturdy boots, long pants,
maybe bring a light jacket, water, first aid kit, insect
repelent, etc. Absolutely no flashlights or flash
photography used during the hike. For more information, see
Hoot Owl
Hike.
I failed again to remind everyone about Friends of
Scouting. There are some families in the pack that have not
sent in their pledges or paid their pledges. The BSA
absolutely runs on private donations from me and you. The
pack or troop has to fulfill at least 50% FOS participation
(we are still under, only 4 families have donated in the
pack, we have 15 total, need 8 to full fill our obligation).
Please be generous---give what you can. You can send in your
pledge and payment by mail (address located on FOS brochure)
or doing it online. Please be sure you refer to Pack 268.
Thank you in advance for your help!!!
Last, some of you have inquired about the Pack
website. I will release the URL to the pack members on
Monday. If you have any pictures of past pack events, please
forward these to Skip, either burn a CD and drop it off to
his house or send it to him as an attachment. We need to
tell our story via by the collage of pictures from our pack
events.

4/26/07
Hi All,
As promised, this weeks meeting (4/27/07) will be at
our assistance cubmaster's house, Bruce Chan, at 7PM. The
pack will be sharing the evening with Troop 110 and is
expected to be a very fun evening of cooking over an open
fire, rock climbing, etc. As a pack, all boys must wear
their full uniform and please bring your books. We will be
working on achievements. Parents, we will be using the time
to plan the garage sale, graduation, and Hoot Owl hike. I
hope all parents will be present. Please begin looking for
usable household items that you no longer want and would
like donate to the sale. I have mine.
Last, I have managed to reserve a picnic and
campgrounds for the pack graduation happening on June 9th.
The location of the site will be at Lake Chabot. The name of
the site is Two Rocks. I was very lucky to find a spot for
us since ALL the picnic/campgrounds in a 25 mile radius are
taken for that weekend. It appears our pack is not the only
pack having a graduation. To give an idea of how bad it is,
I called on Monday to find out what was available, I had
three picnic/campgrounds to choose from, all at Lake Chabot.
Called back the next day, all but one was taken. The cost
for the reservations is $58 with a $25 key deposit which is
refundable upon the safe return of a key that allows us to
use the parking lot gate after hours. I will need a list of
families who wish to stay the night. There will be a night
hike and cooking Smores over an open fire, just to name a
few highlights. The pack has done this kind of an event many
times in the past with great success. Webelos scouts will
need to achieve camping experience as part of their badge
and rank advancement requirements. Remember, the pack will
have some new Webelos after June's graduation. One more
thing, I will not participating in camping but will be
present for the graduation. Bruce Chan and one other
registered leader will be managing the pack after the
graduation. I will discuss more at the
meeting.
Remember to review the Hoot Owl schedule and give me
your preference (please
review the attached schedule). One family already
responded-

* 12. 6/9 - 6/10,
graduation/campout. Garin Park, Hayward?---Will know next
week by 4/27.
Please attend the upcoming pack meetings as much as
you can. Badge requirements for Bear and below can be
completed at home but some require the help of the pack/den.
I will help as much (this includes our den chiefs) as I can
but ultimately it is up to each scout. If the scout is
unable to finish the requirements by graduation, he will not
receive the patch but will have to graduate to the next
rank. I believe the scout has until the next school year to
finish but once the new school year begins, he is out of
luck. The month of May is always a very busy month for
scouts and school.
Summer camp is a great way for cub scouts and Webelos
to earn many achievements, badges, belt loops, and pins AND
have fun doing it in the outdoors.
Also, some of our parents have expressed interest in
training. One of the required trainings is to complete Youth
Protection and Fast Start. This can be done online,
http://olc.scouting.org/.
The other requirement is Leadership Essentials and leader
specific training, ie Webelos Den leader, Cub scout Den
Leader, so on.
For the fundraiser, I need all our pack family members to
please begin searching for household items (must be usable),
appliances (must work), furniture (must be usable) that you
do not want and put them aside to donate to the pack garage
sale. Date and place will be determined at our next pack
meeting 5/27.
For the Hoot
Owl Hike, I need everyone to please
review the attached schedule and let me know by next
meeting or by email the dates you would prefer. I need 20
committed (max). This includes scouts and adults and
siblings (ages 5 or older). The cost is $160 for the group.
$8 per person. There is a parking fee of $3 per car. The
pack can offset some of the cost to
$4/person.
Last, if you have not, I need all our families to
consider donating to the Friends of Scouting. I have sent
some of you the information by mail, at the meetings, and
some of you attended the FOS presentation given by Skip
Phair. You can give what ever amount you want. The donation
is tax deductible. Some of you have made pledges and given
already---thank you!!!. Some have not pledged yet---there is
still time---please consider. However, some have pledged but
not sent in thier donation. Please send this in as soon as
you can. Thank you for your generosity!
IF you have read to this point, excellent!!! If you
just skipped to this point, please go back and read all (and
attachments). There is a lot of important information that
you and your scout need to know. It is very difficult to
communicate everything in a single pack
meeting.
Thank you!!!

John Gillen

All,
I would like to pass this email on to you as quickly
as possible. Below is information regarding cub scout leader
training. As some of you may be aware, this coming June the
pack will have new Webelos scouts. In order for our Webelos
to excel, they will need registered trained leaders. Please
consider this worthwhile goal. The pack needs trained
leaders. I am planning to go, you can never be over trained.
The training will be offered a week from this Saturday. The
location is in Dublin. There are a few adults in our pack
who filled out an application but have not submitted
them---you know who you are. Please drop them off to me.
Thank you!!!

All,
I would like to remind everyone early that the pack's
first meeting this month will be on the 20th, Friday. The
meeting will start at 7PM and be at Searles. I am planning
on a fun evening with party favors, games, treats, and
finger food. It would be great if we had 100% attendance,
the more the better, even our graduates are welcomed. There
will be another meeting in the following week, 27th of
April, Friday, also at Searles. We will work on an a
activity that night which will fulfill achievements. I will
let everyone know the details as we draw closer to the
date.
All scouts, please continue working on your rank
achievements---this June is graduation (date TBA). I am
planning on doing a hike (Hoot Owl) this month, or if the
hike is not doable, than I would like to participate in a
space mission in Merced---both should be quite
entertaining.
I want to also have a fundraising event this month.
The garage sell is a great way to do this and a way to clean
out the garages. Please go through your attic, garage, or
closet and put aside what you do not want and save it for
the garage sell. We will need to place an ad in the paper or
make signs. Who would like to head this up? Let me know. I
will help too.
Reminder, the packs website is being constructed and
will be available at the end of this week. I will give you
the link when I receive it. PLEASE PLEASE, look through your
vast supplies of pictures you took at past pack events and
meetings. I was told for you to send the pictures to Skip
via by email or burn a CD and drop it off to his house or
you can send them to me. Skip will format the pictures. His
email is MacBrass@aol.com.
If you have not done so, please consider sending your
scout to summer camp or day camp this year. The pack will
receive a summertime award if most our scouts attend. There
is still time to register. For our future Webelos, I
encourage them to attend the summer camp. They will have
loads of fun AND earn activity badges for their rank. Same
goes for the cubscouts. I have attached the schedule for
your review---Skip could you please attach the schedule to
the pack website--thanks. The camp fees are high but maybe
if we have fundraisers between now and then and raise enough
money, the pack can offset some of the cost. Also, the
summer and day camp requires parents to attend (a minimum of
2 adults per 8 scouts).
I know everyone worked very hard at the Blue and Gold
in planning and preparations, but unfortunately today, I was
contacted by the principal of Searles regarding the
condition of the kitchen. Apparently, we did not leave it
the same way we found it. The cook had to clean up the
kitchen and rearrange the furniture and appliances before
she could do any food preparations. The pack maybe charged a
cleanup fee $$$. I need to know from our parents who were
involved in the clean up and set up for our Blue and Gold
potluck to tell me what they know regarding the condition of
the kitchen. Unfortunately, I did not inspect the kitchen
before and after. I will be meeting with the cook on Friday
early mourning (8ish) to discuss the situation and hopefully
come to a compromise. If we left the kitchen the same way we
found it, I need to know this. It would be great if the
parents involved would accompany me on Friday but I know
this is not practical. We need to make sure we leave the
building the same way we found it or anywhere we go. The
scouting outdoor code is basically this, "Leave no Trace".
If we were irresponsible, the pack will apologize and
compensate---if needed. Lets all make every effort to ensure
this never happens again. Please keep in mind, the school is
giving the pack free use of the premises. Thanks for your
understanding and help-
At the Blue and Gold, the pack had conducted a
raffle. We gave away three prizes and raised $64!! Thanks to
all who contributed and helped. I also want to thank our Den
Chiefs, Glenn G. and Allen C. for their help in the Blue and
Gold. AND for Steve Armstrong for his help in the adult
leader recognition-
Last, keep spreading the word out about scouting and
the pack. The pack still needs members. Thank you for your
past support-

Greetings,
Below is the pack minutes. Please read. Thank you for

Greetings,
As many of you know Pack 268 hosted another
successful Blue and Gold banquet. Twelve scouts (out of
Fifteen) with their families attended the ceremony and
enjoyed it very much. Our guests included the mayor of Union
City, Troop 176 and 110, and Venture Crew 176, and pack
alumnus. Three of our scouts, Arjun G., Sam H., and Karan
S., graduated to the boyscouts, two to Troop 176 and one to
Troop 110, and were awarded the Arrow of Light,
cubscouting's highest award. Prior to the graduation,
everyone enjoyed the dinner provided by the families of Pack
268. After the dinner, the awards portion of the banquet
began. The pack participated in many events since the last
Blue and Gold. Many of our cubscouts were recognized for
their efforts. Sam H. was recognized for his academic
achievement, accomplishing a near perfect GPA last quarter,
first time ever. Karan S. and Arjun G. where both awarded
the World Conservation Award, requiring participation in a
conservation project. Austin C. received a 3rd place award
for the Webelos Invitation (sequel to Pinewood Derby Race).
Austin C., Hudson C., and Richardo P. receive recognition
for their efforts in introducing a friend to scouting and
helping him to join. The pack's first Tiger Cub, Aaron S.,
was awarded the Tiger Cub Recognition Emblem for recited the
promise, law, motto, slogan, knowing the salute and
handshake. Nine cubscouts, Quentin R., Austin C., Mike D.,
Hector C., Hudson C., Jordan O., Carlos J., Arjun G., and
Sam H. all completed the Bobcat Trail and awarded the Bobcat
Badge. One of our scouts, Mike D., achieved the Wolf rank.
Three of our scouts, Arjun G., Sam H., and Karan S.,
achieved the Webelos Badge, earned numerous activity badges
and belt loops, two scouts, Arjun G. and Karan S., awarded
compass points. The cubscouts though did not take all the
recognition in the banquet. The pack was awarded the Quality
Unit. Two of our leaders, James Rardin and Rahdu Sethi, were
recognized for their many years of service and awarded
knots. James for his role as a cubmaster and Rahdu for being
a den leader for the cubscouts and Webelos. Other awards
were given to our parents, Christine Ortts, Tinnella Coats,
and Jennifer Rasmussen, for their efforts in planning and
coordinating pack events and fundraisers. One of our
siblings, Saachi G., put together, at the last minute, the
Blue and Gold banquet program and did an outstanding job!!
All of our parents and leaders did an tremendous job in
helping with the Blue and Gold. This special ceremony could
not have been possible without parent dedication like you.
Thanks to everyone!!!
Two of our parents, Bruce Chan (former pack Den
Leader) and Mike Denney, were given their patches and
neckerchiefs. Bruce will be the pack's Assistant Cubmaster
and Mike will be the pack's Den Leader. Christine Ortts has
accepted the Advancement Chair position. Radhu Sethi will
continue to be the packs Committee Chair and James Rardin
will continue to be our Treasure. However, he is looking for
a successor.
Regarding the pack alumnus, unfortunately not all
could attend, but the few that did, I would like to thank
them for taking time to show support. Marvin and Russell B.,
Gail Stringer, Jay and Jo Hendee, Suzie, Glenn, and Kevin
G., Allen C., and Bob Ortts, who as I understand, is a
former cubmaster for pack 268 (served from 1980 to 1983) are
all former parents and scouts of Pack 268, attended to show
support. Bob Ortts, by the way, is the grandfather of one
our newest scout, Jordan Ortts.
The overall reaction to the 2007 Blue and Gold was
very uplifting. Despite some errors in the banquet, everyone
came out energized and engaged for another year with the
pack. I do hope the proceeding year will be a milestone for
the pack. Pack 268 is blessed with an abundance of
dedication from present and former parents and leaders that
I am confident the pack will survive and flourish. Thank you
all for your sacrifices.
One more note to add. I recently spoke with Skip
Wagner, Troop 110's webmaster, to find out what it would
take to create a website for Pack 268. As some of you know,
I have been wanting to do this for some time. My belief,
this is a powerful tool as a communication link not only to
our pack members but also to the world community. Skip has
offered to set up a site for the pack and maintain it. The
pack's site will be linked from Troop 110's site. There will
be a nominal fee of $10/year for the server space but that
is peanuts compared to the returns the pack will get from
having its own site. All personal information (names,
address, so forth) listed on the site will be password
protected and only accessed by the pack's members. Skip has
requested the pack roster, calendar, monthly events, and of
course any pictures the pack has taken in pass events to be
sent to him as a start. Please for now just send me the
pictures. The pictures will need to taken from a digital
camera. Also, I would like to create a history page of the
pack. This will include all the cubmasters who served the
pack. As of now, the pack is over 30 years old. I would hate
to see close it's doors with so much memories invested.
Let's keep the torch lit-
(If I have let anyone out, I sincerely
apologize.)

John Gillen

Dear alumus-
Below, is the latest news regarding Pack 268. Our
Blue and Gold has changed from the 16th of March to the 30th
and you are invited. Again, thank you for your continued
support-
Yours In Scouting,
John Gillen
Acting Cubmaster, Pack 268; Committee Member of Troop 110;
Eagle Scout
Greetings,
The date for the Blue and Gold has changed to
March 30th (Friday). I will need to make sure the school
is open for this date but I do think it will be a problem.
Our theme will be Hawaiian and will need help from the pack
to make this a success. We will have 3 cub scouts bridging
over to Boy Scouts during the banquet and will be giving out
a lot of awards and recognitions. I have picked up awards
but have more to get. I will need to sort out the awards at
some point and need help, will let you when that will
happen. Also, a reminder, we will have another pack
meeting next Friday, March 9, at Searles 7PM. This will
be another meeting devoted to achievements and planning the
banquet. Again, all scouts will need to be in full uniform
and must bring their handbooks. Please make sure, scouts,
you put your names in the books. I have been receiving
complaints of books missing and then wanting a replacement.
You only get one book from the pack. If you loose that book,
you will have to buy another---sorry, no more freebees. The
pack just cannot absorb the cost of the lost books, they are
expensive. This also includes neckerchiefs, slides, and
hats. (write your name in your hat)
Important: I may have a uniform inspection at some
point---patches will be awarded.
At our last meeting, we gained another new scout,
Jordan (sorry do not have his last name), who is a 3rd
grader attending Searles. Jordan is a friend of Hudson C. We
had another boy, also a friend of Hudson, visit with us. He
may decide to join too. I want to remind all how important
it is to get the word out about scouting. There is a lot of
boys who maybe interested in joining but do know we exist.
Thanks Hudson for your help!!! We are are in dire need of
first graders (Tiger Cubs)
Scouts, please keep working on your achievements at
home. All requirements requiring a leader to sign off,
please organize your work and be ready to present. We only
have 2 hours in our meetings. I will be bringing the pack
achievement roster again. Please update the roster when you
complete a badge, belt loop, pin, arrow point, rank etc. I
will be using this information to gather the awards at some
point. If you do not update the roster, than you will not
get the award at the banquet, you will have to wait till
graduation in June.
I was planning on having a hike this month but
because of the banquet and planning it would be best to wait
till next month.
During our meeting last Friday, we had a guest, Skip
Phair, from council, present the Friends of Scouting
campaign. Prizes where handed out and mugs for those who
donated the recommended amount of $175. Pack 268 was very
generous, we donated over $1200 to the cause. Not all of
members were present and would like to hand the FOS
pamphlets to those members who were absent during at our
next meeting. It is not too late to donate. Thanks again for
all those who gave!!!!
Last, Pack 268 gain 3 more potential new adult
leaders. They will be focusing on training in the next few
months as den leaders and committee members. Thanks again
for making the choice that will make a tremendous difference
in our organization and ultimately in a our boys
lives.

Greetings Alumnus,
Below are the minutes for P268. However, it neglects
the minutes of the main event, 2007 Pinewood Derby. Three
packs participated, P268, P263, and P174. The race event was
held at the Alvarado Elementary School in Union City on
Friday the 9th. Twenty Eight cub scouts came with their
newly made pinewood cars and entered them into the grand
2007 Pinewood Derby. The cars where weighted and inspected.
Pictures where taken of each scout with their cars. Just
before the race, each car was judged for the special
catagories, "Best Looking", "Fastest Looking", "Best Gas
Mileage", and so on. Then, the races began. Winners where
determined at each den level (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and
Webelos). The first place winners from each den competed for
the overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. At the end of the races,
awards where given. The only disappointment experienced
during the event was not enough time. As a result, the
Webelos scouts where cheated out of races and the
sibling/parent races did not happen. The parents, siblings,
and the scouts effected where understandably disappointed
and upset. It was mentioned to make amends by offering a
public apology and give a piece offering. The leadership
discussed another option, to conduct a challenge race, and
so we did. Pack 268 hosted the challenge race titled
"Webelos Invitation" a week later. Eleven scouts
participated, 5 Webelos and 6 mixed (Wolves and Bears) and
of course siblings. Not all the effected scouts attended but
the majority did. (Please read the rest of the story below)
I want to thank all the leaders and parents who helped in
both events. The scouts and their families all had a great
experience. The leaders and parent evaluated both events and
came up with new ideas for 2008 Pinewood
Derby.
One more detail to mention, Pack 268 had the Pinewood
Derby track repaired and a mobile wooden cabinet made to
store the track in. The cabinet will protect and preserve
the track for many generations of cubscouts to enjoy. The
only thing left to do is paint it and the cubscouts of Pack
268 will be involved in that process. There are plans to do
the same for the Raingutter Regatta track---researching to
see if it is possible.
For the month March, Pack 268 will be hosting it's
Blue and Gold on the 16th. We have 3 Webelos scouts who will
be bridging. Two will be going to Troop 174 and the other is
still deciding. You are invited.
We have a weekend event scheduled in March to go to
Merced to do conduct a Mars mission. Still waiting for the
details.
Thanks for your continued
support-

Greetings,
I would like to thank those who participated in last
Friday's race event, "The Webelos Invitation". The event was
successful!!! We had a total of 11 cub scouts, one boy
scout, 1 adult, and 2 siblings participate in the races.
Three finalist from the cubscout race and three finalist
from the open race was determined in record time. After the
races, awards and refreshments where handed out. Everyone
had a great time. During the event, Pack 268 had a new
second grader visit the pack. The new visitor is a friend of
Hudson C. and is deciding to join. Hopefully, he will come
to our next pack meeting with a decision to join our
wonderful organization at that time.
Our next meeting will be on March 2, Friday, at 7PM,
at Searles. We will be working on achievements, discussing
Friends Of Scouting, and preparing for the Blue and Gold
banquet being scheduled on March 16th, Friday. This event
will need the help of ALL. The theme will be Hawaiian. I
will need all the Webelos achievement pins by next meeting.
Please put the pins in a plastic bag with the scouts name on
it. The pins will be given back at the Blue and Gold. All
earned pins not yet awarded will be awarded at the Blue and
Gold. All other scouts, Wolf and Bear, please let me know
what achievements you have earned by March
9th.
Scouts, please continue working in your scout
handbooks. We need to complete all rank requirements by this
coming June. Also, please think about scout camp this
summer. I need to know who is interested in attending,
scouts and parents, so that I can place a deposit. All Bears
will graduate to Webelos I by June. Therefore, these scouts
will be eligible to attend Webelos camp---lots of
fun.
Hope you all are enjoying the long
weekend.

John Gillen

Alumus,
Please read our pack news below. The pack is
remaining a float, but with time, will sail again. I want to
thank you again for you continued support!!!! And always,
you are welcome to join us at our meetings and
events.
Yours In Scouting,

Troop Committee, Eagle Scout
Greetings,
Last Friday was the pack's 2nd meeting of the year.
We spent the meeting working on achievements and doing a fun
activity. In addition to the achievements and activity, the
pack gained and welcomed a new member, Hudson C. He is a 2nd
grader attending St. Joseph's in Atherns but lives in Union
City. Thank you for choosing Pack 268,
Hudson!!!
As planned, we had a hike last Saturday. Four scouts
and three adults attended the event. We hiked in the Redwood
Regional Park along the Redwood Creek in Oakland. The hike
was 6 miles long with many challenging hills, mud, and ice.
We saw many Redwood trees, massive nest of Lady bugs basking
in the warm sun, lots of dogs with their owners, horses with
their riders (the boys even got to pet the horses), bikers,
and greeted many day hikers along the way. We even passed a
picnic area named "Girls Camp"---"yuk" says the boys. (Girls
camp is where we found the Lady bugs---hmmm---kind-a of
fitting) Over all, the boys had a great time on the hike. We
are planning another hike in February.
The boys that did not attend the hike, used their day
to work on the pinewood cars. Pack 174 invited Pack 268 and
263 to use a parents garage and tools to work on the pine
cars. The parent, I was told, is experienced in wood
working. I am assuming that event went well. We are planning
on having another opportunity for scouts to work on their
pine cars next weekend, Sunday, 28th, at my house---the jury
is still out. Please keep the date, the race is planned on a
Friday, February 9th.
I am trying to setup a meeting with the other two
packs to plan the Pinewood Derby Race. I am extending the
invitation to all our parents and leaders. I made the offer
to have it this Monday at Bronco Billy's in Union City or a
parent's house. So far I have not heard from the other pack
leaders. They want to get together but the day and place is
still in question.
This last Sunday, Troop 110 hosted a canoe day at
Quarry Lakes for all 5th grade boys (and Webelos 2 scouts)
and their families in hopes to introduce and gain interest
in the boy scouts and the troop. Some of our pack members
attended this great event including yours truly--we all had
a great time. Many of the troop adults brought their canoes
to share. 900 boys were invited but about 20 attended.
However, many boys, I understand,
signed-up.
Our next pack meeting will be on Friday, February
2nd, at Searles, 7PM. I hope to have our Pinewood track back
and set up at the meeting to use for practicing on. If your
car is ready, please bring your car to the meeting. I will
have a scale to weigh the cars and do an inspection of the
cars and give constructive advice. If there are any
significant problems with the cars, the boys will have a
week to correct them.
Last, I want to remind all scouts to please wear
their uniforms at the meetings. I have not had a uniform
inspection for a while and we are due for one. Also,
remember, scouts with your parent help, you can work on
achievements at home. Please let me know when you have
completed a achievement so that I can update our pack
achievement roster. If you want credit for your efforts then
let me know. AND please memorize the oath and law---these
are in your books.
Parents, next Saturday, 27th, is University of
Scouting. It is still not too late to register for classes.
This a great way to learn about scouting, meet other
leaders, get some leadership training, and have fun doing
it!! You can do this online at http://www.sfbac.org/training/uos.

Greeting Alumnus,
Below is the pack minutes. Please read and as always,
you are always welcome and encouraged to drop by our pack
meetings. I want to thank Troop 110 for allowing Pack 268 to
be guests at the troop Christmas party. The pack had a blast
AND thank you for the wreath and recognition. My heartfelt
goal is to keep the pack alive as I believe it yours too.
With your continued help, I strongly believe the pack will
flourish and continue for generations to come. Again, thanks
for all your support and continued support. Happy New

Subject: Minutes of our last meeting
Greetings,
Well our first meeting of the year went very well. We
made Jell-O and played a game of Spud. We discussed our
upcoming events for the month of January and February. We
will have a hike and campfire in January and possibly go to
Merced to conduct a space mission (details to follow) either
in January or February. We discussed the Pinewood Derby Race
and the Blue and Gold. By the way, I hope all our scouts and
any siblings, are working on their Pinewood kits. I would
like to have a practice race before the real race happens on
the 9th of February. The practice race will happen on a
Friday at Searles probably will not be a regular pack
meeting. The practice race will give our new scouts a
fighting chance to be competitive. In past experiences, the
new scouts suffered many failures and disappointments due to
lack of experience and understanding of the rules---an
unfair advantage to the old and more experienced scouts.
Both the Pinewood Derby and the Blue and Gold will be a
potluck dinner (Families will be assigned what to bring).
The Blue and Gold event will be an awards evening and
possibly a bridging of our Webelos 2 scouts to Boy Scouts
and will happen in late February or early March. Details of
both events will be handed out in time to
prepare.
For our next pack meeting, it was suggested, that
evening to be used entirely as an advancement evening. One
of our goals as a pack is to get each and every scout ready
to advance to the next rank by June. I hope each scout in
the pack is working on pins and achievements at home. Also,
each scout must have memorized the Oath and Promise and have
done at least one good deed a week and be able to talk about
it during the meetings. We have not been doing this and need
to. Beads are awarded to those who have done good deeds.
Another goal the pack has to be meet is membership.
We will be loosing 3 of our older scouts this year and need
to replenish those loses. We have proposed to council to
enroll at least 5 new scouts for 2007. Since we do not have
any Tiger scouts, we will need to focus heavily on enrolling
1st graders. Please, Please, send out the word on scouting
to friends. My believe is a lot of people do not know what
scouting is about but would like to. I have another parent
who has a 2nd grader and is interested but does not know any
thing about scouting. The mother has family issues to work
out before she and her son can consider joining. Hopefully,
they will decided to join us early this year. Spread the
word. We will continue to recruit at schools and churches
this year---that will never end. Another idea is to set up a
booth on a weekend at a Safeway or bank and just recruit and
or recruit and do a fundraiser together. There are many ways
we can accomplish our goals, just need to be active and
persevere. One fact about Pack 268 that many of our new
members do not know; about 7 years ago, Pack 268 was the
largest pack in the district. We had over 60 active scouts
enrolled. This can happen again. I would be elated with 20
active scouts enrolled.
We discussed fundraising again. The pack will need to
raise at least $500 more this year. One option was to sell
See's Candies, another was to have a garage sell. There are
many ideas out there but need to select one or more to
accomplish the goal. Coordinators will be needed to make
this a reality.
Last, we discussed University of Scouting (UOS). This
event will happen at the end of January. It is an
opportunity for adults to learn more about scouting, their
role in scouting, and to become better leaders in the realm
of scouting. The training is conducted in a class
environment with other dedicated parents. I have one new
parent in the pack who is interested in attending. I hope
there will be more. However, you are under no obligation to
attend, but it is a prerequisite if you want to be a leader
in the pack or troop. For all new leaders, first you have to
be registered with the council as an adult leader, and
second, there are a few mandatory classes to take. One is
Youth Protection (done online), Fast Start (pack or troop
specific) and New Leader Essentials. University of Scouting
also offers many other classes ranging from how to do
conduct crafts and songs to backpacking, camping, and
cooking. I would recommend for all new leaders to focus on
learning the scouting infrastructure first before enrolling
in the more fun classes. To learn more about the UOS, the
URL is www.sfbac.org/training/uos.
Some classes such as the manditory ones mentioned, award
patches to those who successfully complete the courses at
the end of the day. Not all courses award patches. Also, you
do not need to stay the full day.
One more thing, we did not discuss summer camp for
Webelos or our Wolf or Bear scouts. We need to find out how
many scouts will be attending and submit our application
early so that we receive our discounts. Each camp will need
a minimum of two parents attending. The camp is a week long
and is real camping outdoors in tents. Scouts will be able
to work on pins and achievements, fishing, canoeing, and
other fun scheduled events. I awaiting to receive the 2007
catalogue for more information and enrolment. Medical forms
will need to filled out for each scout and filled with the
pack and submitted at the time of camp. The pack needs the
medical forms regardless. I do not think our new scouts have
submitted any medical yet---this needs to be one our action
items.
Our next pack meeting will be on the 19th of January.
Hope the new year is bringing prosperity and good health to
all.
Yours In Scouting,
John Gillen

Greetings,
The Christmas Caroling Event will be hosted by Pack
268 and held on the 16th, which is a Saturday, at 5PM, at
the Almavia senior home off of Alvarado Niles Road in Union
City (See address on subject line). The seniors will be
having their dinner while we sing to them. I will not be
able to make this event due to a prior commitment that
evening. The pack wants to have a practice session before
the event. The practice will be held at the pack meeting on
the 15th, Friday, 7:30pm at Searles. All are welcome to
attend the practice and Saturdays event. Jennifer Rasmussen
is coordinating the event. Please email her or call her for
questions. Please let her know you are from Troop 110.
Thanks again for your support.

I have set the date for the 16th. It looks like that
suited most of the parents. I am sorry for the people who
can not attend, we will miss you. If Troop 110 wishes to
join, the more the merrier.

Greetings,
As promised, I am forwarding the information
regarding the Caroling event the pack is coordinating.
Jennifer and Alma have made arrangements to conduct our
caroling at a retirement home in Union City. There are two
openings available 10th (Sunday) or 16th (Saturday), so we
need to get concensus on the dates as soon as possible.
Please let Jennifer or me know your preference by responding
to this email at 4gillens@msn.com.
It would be better if you emailed Jennifer directly at
Jennifer.Rasmussen@ValleyPSI.com
since she (and Alma) is the one coordinating the event.
Thanks-

Greetings Alumnus,
Below is a copy of the latest Pack 268 news. The pack
has decided to join Troop 110's Christmas party this year.
The pack wants to extend its gratitude to Mr. Fournell for
his contribution the pack's last Friday meeting. The subject
of the meeting was on First Aid and Mr. Fournell, being
certified in First Aid, taught the cubscout the basics.
Thank you so much, Bill!!! Also, Jay and Jo Hendee have
decided to rejoin the pack as committee members and
re-charter representatives. Jo, as successful as she in the
art of PR, made phone calls and collected the pack and
recharter fees---way to go Jo!!! As always, the pack invites
any of our alumnus to the meetings and events. The pack
could use help in the Caroling event---any takers? Will
forward the details of the event when received. Again,
thanks for all you support past and
present-

Subject: Recap on last Fridays meeting
Greetings,
Last Fridays meeting was another success. The subject
for the meeting was First Aid. Bill Fournell, who was our
guest at the meeting, is certified in teaching First Aid
coupled with over 30 years of volunteer work with the Red
Cross, taught the scouts what do in an emergency (i.e. dial
911, how to give information such as name, addresses,
directions, brief description of the injuries) and how to
treat basic cuts, bruises, sprains, etc. After the class,
the boys were challenged on what they learned. Thanks to Mr.
Fournell for a very informative evening.
The pack gained another scout at last Friday's
meeting. Austin's friend, Mike, decided to join our pack
family. Thank you Austin for spreading the word about
scouting!!! The pack needs more help though. If any scouts
in our pack have friends, who think might be interested in
scouting, please invite them and their parents to the
meetings. We will also have one or two more recruiting
nights before the holiday break. All our invited to attend
the recruiting, in fact, encouraged. The recruiting will not
be conducted at Searles but at the schools this time.
Details of the meetings will be forwarded via email. I
believe our first recruiter night will be conducted at
Kityama Elementry school.
We also gained some more parent/adult leaders to the
pack. Thank you for your support---Mike Denney and Jo and
Jay Hendee, whom decided to join the pack committee---thank
you, again!!!!! FYI: Besides scout membership, the pack
needs parent involvement as well. Steve Armstrong, our pack
commissioner, will also be on the committee. However, he is
involved with another pack and may not be present to all our
meetings or events but when he does show, it a tremendous
help to the pack---thanks Steve for dropping by last
Friday's meeting!!!
We will be conducting a Christmas Caroling event
soon. The date, time, and place are still to be determined.
Jennifer and Alma, our dedicated pack parents, will be
coordinating this event. So many of our elderly are lonely
and this intensifies during the holidays. Our coordinators
have been in contact with some of our community retirement
homes. We will pre-practice the holiday songs and exercise
our vocal chords prior to the event---so please stay tuned
for details on this.
Re-chartering fees and pack dues total $50 for year
the of 2007. We still have a few more scouts that have not
turned in their dues and or verified their membership
information. Please bring dues in to our next pack meeting
or bring it with you on our next event (make checks payable
to Pack 268. Reminder, ff your scout has money in his
account, that money can be used to pay for the dues). IF not
done so, please email or call Steve Armstrong to verify your
membership information as soon as possible. His email is
STARMSTR@comcast.net.
Last meeting, the pack decided to combine the pack
Christmas party with Troop 110's party. The troop's party
will be held on the 20th, Wednesday, at the Contempo Commons
club house in Union City, at 6:30PM. This will be a potluck
dinner. Further details of the party will be sent to all
soon.
IMPORTANT: The pine wood derby kits will be given out
at the next pack meeting, 15th of December. I will pick up
the kits but I will need help in wrapping the kits in
holiday paper prior to the meeting--any
takers?
Happy Holidays!!!

Subject: Thank You!!!
Greeting Packers,
I just wanted to thank all who participated in the
Scouting For Food event last Saturday. Once again, the
interest was overwhelming. Five cubscouts and sixteen
boyscouts participated (and 1 girlscout) along with parents
and siblings. With the combined efforts from Troop 110 and
Pack 268, we successfully collected 1975 cans and dried
food!!! I was told we surpassed our records from previous
years. The event began at 10AM and ended at 2PM. Afterwards,
we rejoined at Mountain Mikes and were treated to pizza by
Troop 110. AND as promised we held our contest. Three
winners were selected and awarded. Unfortunately, none of
the cubscouts won but I believe a few of our scouts went
home with some donated stuffed animals.
I mentioned, at one of the pack meetings last month,
the troop participates annually on Thanksgiving day to hand
out Thanksgiving dinners to the homeless and the elderly for
the League of Volunteers in Newark or "LOV Newark". IF
anyone is interested, please contact Mike Magno (below is
the information) if you want to be a driver or just want to
help. Unfortunately, I will be out of town that day. I have
done this for the past three years and never regretted it,
always reminding me of my blessings, but most importantly,
brightening someone's day. I was told from Mr. Magno, the
pack is welcome to attend. Just please let him know if you
want to participate (before Wednesday) and you are from Pack
268. Important: For those cubscouts who participate in doing
a good deed like Scouting for Food or handing out
Thanksgiving dinners or doing something unselfish for
someone else, you will be awarded a bead for each effort
(which I will explain later)
Recapping last meeting, four scouts worked on
achievements and managed to complete one and start on
others. Good job scouts!!!! Scouts please continue working
on your advancements. Regarding the upcoming events,
Jennifer and Vilma are going to coordinate the caroling
event in December. The details of the event will be
announced later. (We will have a one nite rehearsal to get
our vocal chords into shape.) We also discussed fundraiser
ideas and the fact the pack is in need of income. The garage
sale is of interest but other ideas came out too. One was to
sell See's chocolate bars. Fifty percent of what we sell is
profit. Let's not forget the holidays are a perfect time to
sell candies as well as have a garage sell. Jennifer has
graciously volunteered into researching the See's
fundraiser. I will need someone to coordinate the a garage
sell and find a garage. We can place an aid in the Penney
Saver. The troop has done this and raised over $1000 in one
day. We will also have a Christmas party and hand out the
Pine Wood Derby kits on our last meeting for the year. I
will need everyone's help in this effort. Last, please
scouts, if you have a friend that has expressed interest in
the scouts or who might like scouts, please invite them (and
their parents) to our meetings. If they sign, you will
receive a recruiters patch. I have at this point two maybe a
third boy who wants to join our pack. We are in desperate
need of Tiger Cubs (1st graders).
EVERYONE who hasn't done so needs to pick up their
popcorn from Jennifer and pay for the popcorn if not done
so. Thanks to all who participated. A $180 of the profit
will go to the pack with the remaining going to the scouts
accounts. Those scouts who participated will need to be
recorded and how much they sold. The money in the accounts
can be used to purchased camping gear, pay for scouting fees
(such as rechartering fees or dues), uniforms,
etc.
FYI: There our other events outside of scouting just
for families. These events involve Disney's ice capades,
Warriors and Raiders games, and the Globe Trotters. For the
scouts and their famlies, there are discounted tickets
available---see the SFBSA council or MP district websites
for further details.
Last, our next meeting will be held on December 1st,
Friday, at Searles at 7PM. We will be learning about First
Aid. I have a guest speaker who is certified in teaching
First Aid, will be teaching us the basics. I hope everyone
will be present (even siblings). What you learn may save a
life someday.
Have a great Thanksgiving
Holiday!!!

Greetings Alumnus,
Last weekend was Scouting for Food and Troop 110
assisted Pack 268 in handing out bags. Traditionally, the
pack is assigned one of the biggest areas but due to
dwindling membership in the pack, the pack is unable to
complete it's big assignment. I want to thank the troop for
assisting the pack in completing it's assignment. In
addition to helping the pack the troop managed to complete
it's assignment too. Thanks so much. As you know, next
Saturday is phase two to Scouting for Food. We will be
picking up the bags filled with nonperishable foods, sorting
them, and sending the food to the LDS church off of Decoto.
Once again, the pack will be participating but will need the
assistance of the troop. There will be a contest afterwards
and maybe if time permits lunch at Round Table too. I hope
this weekend will be even bigger turn out than last weekend.
The Hendee's have graciously opened their garage for sorting
the foods---Thank you!!. Below is a copy of the email I sent
out to the pack.
The pack will be having another meeting this Friday,
7PM at Searles. And once again, you are welcome to drop by.
Thanks again-
Yours In Scouting
John Gillen
----------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings P268,
I want to THANK all who participated in Scouting for
Food phase one last Saturday in handing out bags. With the
help of Troop 110, we managed to finish our assignment.
This coming Saturday will be phase two of Scouting for
Food. This day we will need EVERYONE (Troop 110 will
help too) involved in picking up the bags filled with non
perishable foods, sorting them, and taking them to the
Decoto LDS church. We will meet again at Searles, at 8:30AM,
assign groups, discuss the rules, then begin picking up bags
at 9AM sharp. As incentive, there will be a contest
afterwards. The three scouts or siblings whose guess comes
closest to the total food collected will receive a prize. If
time permits, we will rejoin at Round Table pizza and have
lunch. Scouting for Food is another great way to give back
to our community and to give thanks for our blessings and
meaning to our holidays. Once again, all scouts
participating will need to wear their full uniform. All
parents participating will need to wear the pack tee shirt.
For those who do not have the pack tee shirt, I will bring
the pack supply for purchase---$8 cash or check
accepted.
This coming Friday will be a regular pack meeting,
7PM at Searles. All scouts need to bring their handbooks
and wear their full uniform. I would like to focus on first
aid that night if we can. Learning first aid basics might
some day save a life. In my son's troop, a scout did just
that, he saved his father's life with what he learned in
first aid in scouting. I am hoping he will share his story
someday by publishing it in the Boys Life. Hearing stories
like that are very inspirational and bring value back to
scouting. There are some things a young boy can receive in
his daily life and others he can't, first aid is one and
scouting is the conduit--attend next meeting to find out. IF
there is anyone in the pack who has a medical background or
knows someone who does, please attend and be our guest
speaker on the topic of first aid. Thank you!!
After the Thanksgiving holidays, we will be planning
our next events and finishing up rechartering. I would like
to have one event doing Christmas caroling at a senior home.
I would like one or two of our parents to coordinate this
please. This is a very fun event and no experience is
required or expected just have a willing and loving heart to
make someone elses day a holiday.
I hope everyone is in good health and spirits this
holiday season. See you on Friday-

Subject: Pack 268 News
Greetings,
As many of you know last Saturday, 28th, was Make A
Difference Day, a national day of community service. In
addition to myself and some boyscouts from Troop 110, three
cubscouts and parents from Pack 268 participated in this
great event. Varun Sethi, from Troop 176, organized the
event for the pack and did a great job. We spent 2.5 hours
planting bushes, racked pine needles, and stenciled the
storm drains. Varun, if you would please, send an email out
to the pack illustrating in your own words what you and the
pack did on Make Difference Day and who showed up---send a
copy to your scoutmaster too. Thanks! Pictures where taken
at the event from our parents. IT would be nice if those
parent or parents posted those pictures. Thanks.
Also, the pack held a recruiting meeting at Searles last
Friday, 27th. Two boys signed up, Guillen B., 1st grade, and
Owen F., 2nd grade. Welcome!!! Mr. Rodriguez from SFBAC (San
Fransico Bay Area) council along with myself and Radhu
Sethi, ran the recruiting meeting. We may receive more
members in the near future from a dysfunctional pack in
Newark. One message that Mr. Rodriguez left with the pack
was the need to "spread" the news about the pack and
cubscouts in general. Scouts and parents need to participate
in this effort. A big pack brings a lot more resources, more
competition, and thus more fun. He asked all the boys to
bring one friend with them to the next meeting. The boy who
manages to get his friend to sign up will receive an
official recruiters patch. Presently, the pack is in need of
more 1st grade (Tiger Cubs) members. Please, spread the news
about scouting and the pack. Thank you!! And special thanks
to Mr. Rodriguez for helping with our recruiting.
Our next meeting will be next Friday, 3rd of November,
held at Searles at 7PM. Scouts, please wear your full
uniform. We may have an inspection, so be prepared. The boy
or boys who manages to be in complete uniform will receive
an award (Our newest scouts you are exempt for now).
Remember a complete uniform is hat, neckerchief, slide,
official boyscout shirt, belt, and blue jeans. The pack
number, 268, will need to be sewn on left shoulder (Refer to
your handbook for proper uniform and patch orientation).
Traditionally, the pack provides the neckerchief, pack
number, handbook, and slide. If you do not have any of
these, I will be bringing my limited supply to next weeks
meeting. Last, we will be working on achievements so please
bring your SCOUT HAND BOOKS. Along with the achievements, we
will be filling out the pack rank rosters to find out where
each scout is in rank achievements. Our three Webelos II
scouts, this is especially important for you to bring all
your handbooks for Tiger Cub, Wolf, Bear, Webelos I &
II. It would be a BIG help if you would record your
achievements on a piece of paper and bring your list along
with your books to the meeting.
To parents, between now and Christmas, there are events
scheduled for the pack. In order for these events to take
place, we need volunteers to coordinate them. Our latest
event will be Scouting for Food happening in early November.
This event consumes two Saturdays prior to Thanksgiving, one
for distribution of the bags and one for pick up of the
bags. I have registered the pack for this event and
collected the bags for distribution. I will need all parent
and scout help for this event. I will also be soliciting
help from Troop 110, however, they have their own bags to
distribute and pick up. In December, we will be caroling and
need a coordinator for that event and need coordinators to
help conduct a pack awards night. This includes wrapping and
handing out pinewood derby cars to the scouts and helping
with awards and decorations. It maybe a good idea to have a
parent meeting next week to discuss the upcoming events.
Either we have it at Fridays meeting or Sunday, the 5th. It
will depend on the attendance and time. Last, rechartering
is here and I will need help from every parent in completing
this task. This involves verifying addresses, phone numbers,
names of scouts and adults, email addresses, rank,
leadership positions and dues. I would like to conduct this
at the meeting as well.
Regarding the pack income. I am not sure how successful
the popcorn sales is doing will know on Monday (if you have
not returned your popcorn roster to Jennifer Rasmussen,
please do so as soon as possible). Besides the popcorn
fundraiser, I would like to propose to the pack to conduct
another fundraiser specifically having a pack sponsored
garage sale before the Christmas holidays---we will need
donations. The pack needs yearly funding to purchase scout
supplies and do maintenance and repairs to our equipment. So
without the fundraisers, the pack would have to impose
monthly dues to pay for the supplies and repairs. It is much
more meaningful when we raise the money from the public than
just solicit it from the pack families. Fundraising provides
free advertising for the pack and scouting.
See you next Friday.

All,
There is a meeting this Friday at Searles
beginning at 7PM. We will be building boats to race on
the following Saturday, 21st. The race will be held at
Arroyo Park in Union City and begin at 10AM and end at 1PM.
We will have a picnic afterwards. Hamburgers and Hotdogs
will be served. We need to have a head count of who will be
participating on Saturdays event, this is includes scouts,
adults, and siblings. You can reply by email to Radhu Sethi
(Varun_set@hotmail.com).
We will need help with beverages, chips, condiments,
produce, paper plates, cups, utensils, napkins and
decorations. Offers can be taken now or wait to be assigned
at Friday's meeting. If you have a preference now is the
time to let everyone know. Scouts, please wear your complete
uniforms at Friday's meeting but remember to bring an old
tee shirt to wear over your uniform for the boat building.
Saturday, pack tee shirts are worn (scouts and adults). I
also need help in setting up the event. I will be at the
park at 9:30AM. If you have a low or medium heat glue gun
and glue sticks (designed to adhere to wood, metal, and
plastic) please bring them. Coloring equipment and some
tools (and some glue guns and glue sticks) will be
provided.
I hope popcorn sales is doing well. The end is
nearing.

Subject: Reminder: Pack meeting this
Friday
Greetings,
I just want to remind you that this Friday there
is scheduled pack meeting at Searles at 7PM. I will not
be attending but Radhu Sethi and Steve Armstrong will be.
The agenda will be to work on rank requirements. All scouts
will need to bring their books with them and wear full
uniforms. The next meeting will be on the 20th of October.
We will be working on building boats to race the next the
day, Rain Gutter Regatta. We will be conducting the event at
Arroyo Park in Union City and have a picnic afterwards. I
reserved the picnic area from 10AM to 1PM. I hope all will
participate in this event. Also, we will be participating in
Make A Difference Day on October 28th. We will help with the
landscaping near the Union City Civic Center. Again,
expecting a full turn out for this too.
Last Saturday, the pack participated in a another
Trail Trekker hike, Wild Cat Peak in Berkeley. Four scouts,
1 sibling, and three adults attended and a great time. The
hike was 2.5 miles long with a peak elevation of 1200
feet---a good work out. While at the peak, we saw Golden
Gate Bridge, San Francisco and Bay, Angle Island, Alcatraz,
Mt Tamapias, Mt Diablo, and so on--an awesome few. I want to
thank Varun Sethi for conducting the hike. He did a great
job leading us through the wild jungles of the Tilden Nature
Park. We saw some turtles, a red tailed hawk, lots of poison
oak, thistle, wild artichokes, and some humans too. Varun
conducted our hike to fulfill one of his Brown Sea, which is
a boy scout requirement to learn how to be a leader,
challenges. He did a great job in teaching us about the
nature along the hike and used his map and compass to get us
back to our cars safe and sound. Hopefully our next hike
will a night hike, the Hoot Owl in
Livermore.
Till then,

Subject: Please Mark Your October/November
Calendars
All,
Please mark you calendars!!! October 28th is the
annual Make Difference Day at Union City. The pack
traditionally participates in this worthwhile event. I have
registered the pack to do landscaping at the Union City
Civic Center near the UC police department and UC Library. I
hope we will have a great turn out, make a difference in our
community, and have fun doing it!!! The event begins at 9 AM
and ends at 12 noon---we will meet at the Civic Center.
Their will be donuts and water served. Since we will be
participating as a pack, we need to wear our pack tees.
Also, since we will be doing landscaping, sturdy shoes, long
pants, pack tee shirts, and work gloves will be
required---please scouts do not wear your uniforms. I
included the URL if you have anymore questions: http://www.ci.union-city.ca.us/city%20news/cn_MADD_.htm.
I am also looking for someone to coordinate this, basically
take names and represent the pack on the day of the event.
Again, I have already registered the pack. Also, I am in the
process of reserving Arroyo park in Union City for the Rain
Gutter Regatta on the 21 of October. I will need someone to
coordinate this event as well. (I may do this though). One
more reminder, Scouting for Food will be happening in the
first and second week of November. We need someone to
coordinate this too. I or Steve, will need to pick up the
assigned routes at a roundtable meeting. But need someone
from the pack to organize the event. This is also worth
while event. Picking up none perishable foods for the needy.
It takes two weekends, one to hand out bags, and second
weekend to pick up the bags then take them to staging area
(nearby parents house), then take them to a drop off point
(Decoto LDS church)---all in the second week. Thanks-

To all pack alumnus,
Below is the Pack news. We are in search of who to
contact regarding the pack tee shirts. The pack is running
out of shirts and will need to either replenish the supply
with the original design or do a redesign. Any help would be
appreciated. Also, as always, you are welcomed to drop in on
the pack meetings and events. Thanks-
John Gillen
Greetings,
Last Friday's meeting was another big
success!!!---thanks to all who participated. We learned
about planes, how to build them, and learned to fly them.
The pack welcomed another new scout, Hector Cardenas, and
wished a scout (sorry forgot that scouts name please help) a
happy birthday. With the help of our new popcorn
coordinator, Jennifer Rasmussen, the pack was able to begin
the popcorn fundraising this year---thanks again,
Jennifer!!! Remember, the popcorn we sell, the pack earns a
percentage (about 40%) of it. The money will allow us to
offset cost to field trips, purchase supplies for our
activities at pack meetings, repair equipment, purchase new
equipment, help the less fortunate scouts with dues and
uniforms, and so on. This is really a worthy cause so lets
do some serious selling this year. By the way, selling
popcorn is a joint effort, scouts and parents as a team
selling. Also, I need to mention the prizes scouts can earn
(please review your popcorn order forms there is a flyer
showing all the possible prizes to earn) We will make sure
all the scouts are rewarded for their efforts this
year.
Our next meeting will be on October 6th, Friday. This
will be a meeting dedicated to working on badges and
activities, please bring your books. Unfortunately, I will
be on travel and can not make it. However, I understand
Steve Armstrong, our pack commissioner, will be present and
helping that night. I want all scouts to attend and be in
full uniform please. Last meeting was a BIG improvement on
attendance and uniforms, keep up the good
work!!.
Regarding Hiller Museum, I hope there was a lot of
attendance, lots of pictures taken, and all who attended had
a great time!! Thanks in advance to all the parents that
attended had helped. By the way, I need to know who all
went. Hopefully a parent created a list of names. We will
need those names for our awards night which should be soon.
We will need at some point to update our advancement roster
too. Does anyone know where that roster is? Let me know.
Thanks.
Steve, I have the boats if you want to work on them
on next Friday's meeting, let me know so that I can get them
to you. If you would rather wait until the meeting after,
October 20th, which will be the Friday before the day of the
race let me know too. Either way, I will need to bring them
for boys to work on in time for the
race.
James, I have some checks and cash for you to
deposit. Let me know when it will be a good time to bring
them over. Last, we are running out of pack tee shirts. Do
you know who was in charge of the printing the shirts? I
think I asked you this question before but I thought I would
ask again. Let me know, thanks-

Greetings,
I just want to remind you there will be a pack
meeting this Friday, the 8th, at Searles beginning 7 PM. We
will work on the Law and Oath, do a song, have a outdoor
game, discuss important dates, meeting, events, popcorn
sales so on. I am in the process of scheduling another hike,
Hoot Owl, in late September or sometime in October. It will
depend on availability and yes there is fee and a maximum
attendance for this hike will discuss in meeting. Also, I
need to have two parent/leader who are planning to attend
the Hiller Museum at the San Carlos Airport in San Bruno, on
September 16th, to sign and fill out driver information on
the permit for the event. The permit will need to be sent to
council by fax as soon as possible. I will bring the permit
to the meeting on Friday. I hope to see all of you at the
meeting.
Radhu, I owe you a check for last June's
graduation.

Greetings Alumnus,
The pack had a successful hike a week ago and is
planning more hikes and events in the future (See below).
Again, you are all welcome any time to participate. Thanks
in advance for your continued support.

All,
As you know last weekend we had a hike and parent
meeting which was a very busy weekend for the pack. First of
all I want to thank the parents who attended the parent
meeting last Sunday. The meeting was very productive with an
end result of a pack calendar for year 06/07. Amita Gupta
will email our new calendar very soon---thank you, Amita. We
will have a lot of hikes, activities, and events scheduled
for the new year. However, keep in mind the dates are
tentative and can change.
The hike at Sycamore Grove last Saturday, 24th, was a
success. Lots of sun and wildlife was offered during the
hike. Halfway through our trekking, we stopped and had lunch
under the sycamore trees. Along the way, we saw lots of
deer, a full grown buck and it's doe (a real treat), some
fawns, a red tailed hawk, lots of turkey vultures, ground
squirrels, lizards, insects and lots of Sycamore trees and
vineyards. All who attended had a great time. Most of our
new scouts attended the hike, which was a plus since
Sycamore Grove is predominantly flat making it a great entry
level trail, will be awarded their first Trail Treker patch
and the Sycamore Grove patch. Our next scheduled hike, Hoot
Owl, another Trail Trekker hike, will be in October. The
hike is a night hike at Sycamore Grove and will be limited
to 20 hikers that includes scouts and parents. The total
cost is $160.00, includes a ranger or docent as our guide.
The hike will be very interesting and a way for all scout to
learn about nature at night. More information will be given
as we near the date.
Our first pack meeting will be held at Searles,
Friday, September 8, from 7 to 8:30 PM. This meeting will be
a normal meeting, working on the Law and promise, doing a
fun activity outdoors (surprise), and having refreshment
afterwards than adjourning. I hope all can make it.
September 15th, also a Friday, a pack meeting is scheduled
at Searles, from 7 to 8:30 PM. We will be building planes,
learning the basics of aviation, and flying the planes. This
event will prepare us for the following day event at San
Carlos airport and the Hiller Museum scheduled for September
16, Saturday. We will meet at Searles at 8:30 AM and leave
shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, I will not be able to
make this event due a mandatory workshop for volunteers I
have to attend at my church. A permit will need to filled
out by two parent/leaders who are going. I can fill out the
even portion of the permit but I need two parent/leaders who
are attending to sign it and fill out the driver portion on
second sheet. Also, All drivers who are going need to fill
out the back. I will bring the permit to our meeting on the
8th. The permit needs to be completed as soon as possible
and sent to council.
The Rain Gutter Regatta will be held in October. The
boat kits will be given out a week so before the race and
the rules will be explained. We will devote one pack meeting
working on the boats. The scouts and their parents will
learn and have a great time making the
boats.
It would be nice to have monthly pack newsletter
(including text and pictures) recapping all the fun we had
in the following month. It is great moral booster and a
great way to archive and show our future cub scouts what the
pack and cub scouting is all about. IF there is anyone who
would like to pilot this endeavor, please come forward.
Troop 110 has been doing this for long time now with been
powerful results.
Hope all is well and enjoying the Labor Day holiday-

All,
Just sending a reminder of our hike scheduled for
next Saturday, 25th, at Sycamore Grove in Livermore. We will
meet at Searles at 8:30 AM and leave shortly after. The trip
to the park will take approximately 35 to 40 minutes. The
hike is about 4.8 miles in length, on level ground, 3 to 4
hours to complete (typical). Please bring plenty of water
and snacks for the hike, a day pack, binoculars and or
camera, and a first aid kit (optional, good idea though).
Wear sturdy shoes, suntan lotion, hat, and the pack Tee
shirt. For those who still need a pack tee shirt, I will be
bringing new shirts for purchase of $8 each. I do have some
used tees for free 2 Y smalls and 1 adult large. Also, for
those scouts who would like to pursue earning some
achievements, please bring your scout books. There will be a
lot of wild life to see and enjoy but NOT to take home. I
hope we will have a great turn out and a good time learning,
especially like to see the new scouts attending. After the
hike, there are picnic tables available for those wishing to
have lunch at the park. Unfortunately, I have other
commitments and will be leaving. There is a parking fee of
$3, suggest bringing exact change. There are toilet
facilities with running water. No open fires allowed.
Last, the day after our hike, Sunday 26th, we will be
conducting a pack parent/leader meeting to discuss and
construct a pack calendar for 06/07 year at Radhu's house at
2 PM. We need all parent/leader participation, please come.
There is a pool for the kids and I believe snacks will be
provided or be asked to bring.
This invitation is extended to alumnus as
well!
See you next weekend,
Yours In Scouting,
John Gillen
