Hello
Troop 110
It's
that time of year again for LOV (League of Volunteers)
Newark Annual Thanksgiving Day Meal Delivery. This is my
12th year of volunteering Troop 110 to LOV for this very
worthy cause. I started this project back in 1999 as my
Woodbadge ticket and this is probably the longest running WB
ticket that I know of. For those of you that are new to the
troop welcome aboard and I'll briefly describe to you what
this is all about and what I expect from my
volunteers.
On
Thursday, November 24, 2011 Thanksgiving Day, LOV
Newark puts together with the help of many volunteers from
different organizations a Thanksgiving Day meal for the
needy and less fortunate people and families that live in
the Tri-City areas (Newark, Fremont and Union City) and also
Hayward. These people can either come to the dining hall or
have their meals delivered to them. Troop 110 and Crew 110's
role is to provide the drivers and scouts (siblings are
welcome to participate) to deliver the meals to the home
bound folks in the Tri-City. The home bound folks are the
ones that cannot make it to the dining hall because of a
handicap, medical condition, lack of transportation, or
personal reason(s) (no questions
asked).
Our
portion of the meal delivery usually takes from 3 to 4 hours
to complete and I usually give 4 hours of credit for
community service hours to scouts and students that need
hours for their rank advancement or school. If you are
volunteering to get credit for your school's community
service requirements please bring with you your school's
paperwork so that I can sign you off.
Also,
LOV has some new guidelines for the drivers and volunteers.
LOV needs to know in advance exactly how many drivers there
will be and what their names are (passenger's names are not
required, as long as they are in scout uniform). This is
because LOV needs to assign the delivery routes in advance;
it is too chaotic for LOV to try to assign them on
Thanksgiving Day when they get more or fewer drivers than
they had anticipated.
I
will be in charge of Troop 110, Crew 110, and any Cub Scout
Packs that are attached to Troop 110. LOV requires only one
leader in charge and not multiple leaders so that means by
request from LOV no one can enter the dining hall on the
morning of this event and only LOV or myself can give the go
ahead to enter the dining hall. Any questions or issues that
you may have has to be addressed to me and I will try to
answer or resolve them.
So
far the venue is at the same location as previous years but
I will have to confirm the meeting time with LOV
Newark.

Recommended-maps
of Newark, Fremont, Union City and/or a GPS,
community service hours application (for students
wanting credit) and lastly your
enthusiasm.

I
know this is a lot of info to absorb but it's really
necessary because I consider this a unique service project.
Also, you can talk to the scout and parents from previous
years that have participated in this numerous times. I want
to thank everyone in advance for your participation and
patience and this would not be possible without your help.
To many this is a life changing event and it's a great way
to kick off the holiday season and to help the
needy.
LASTLY,
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. FOR ANYONE THAT IS DRIVING A VEHICLE
TO DELIVER THE MEALS, THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED BY LOV - I
WILL NEED YOUR NAME TO SUBMIT TO LOV SO THEY CAN ASSIGN TO
YOU YOUR ROUTE. I WILL NEED THE NAMES OF ALL DRIVERS BY
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2011.
If
you have any questions please email
me.

Michael
